HERE IS YOUR CHANCE to design an EXCLUSIVE COLLECTION to be sold in TARGET stores across Canada! In addition, you could WIN The Suzanne Rogers $25,000 CASH Award For Most Promising New Label and a full-page feature in FLARE magazine valued at over $30,000! This must-see event on the fashion calender will attract top retailers, buyers, stylists, editors and fashionable consumers.

It's a boot camp for new designers where you can gain valuable knowledge about how to create a newsworthy yet marketable line, how to edit your line and what's involved in planning a fashion show. Over the duration of the 6-month competition, designers work with the judges and TFI's Executive Director to improve their line and their chance of winning. It's a lot of hard work and tight deadlines; are you up for the challenge? For many, this is the MOST VALUABLE part of the competition.

Contact TFI TODAY and ask for your application today. DEADLINE TO APPLY IS DECEMBER 3, 2012 SO DON'T DELAY!

The Visual Brand

Many thanks to Pheinixx from Pencil for presenting a very comprehensive seminar on Tuesday night about developing a visual identity for your brand.

For those of you working in fashion, you're already aware of the selling power of a brand name but have you thought about the subtle messages relayed through the visual representation of that brand?  Why is Joe Fresh's brand orange?  Why did Theory choose that font and size for its brand?  Why are Holt Renfrew shopping bags hot pink lacqured paper and TNT's shopping bags made from turquoise cloth?

A brand represents the sum of a product's elements - yes, it's your label but it also projects the demographic and market you're targeting and gives clues to your price point and quality. It's your company's first impression and we all know how important that is.

So the next time you look at a business card, letterhead or a hangtag, take a moment and ask yourself why it appeals to you or not.

If you're a TFI member and missed the seminar, fear not! Pheinixx has kindly provided us with key points from her presentation and you can review them in our Resource Centre in our "Survival Seminars" folder. Be sure to call TFI to book your time in the Resource Centre. See you soon.

The Toronto Fashion Incubator extends heartfelt thanks and appreciation to sponsors, designers and attendees for helping to make TFI25, held May 3, 2012, at the Royal Ontario Museum, such a resounding success. This memorable evening, emceed by Juno award-winning entertainer Jully Black, included a flash mob performance by The Wexford Gleeks and by new recording artist Anastasia A., two fashion show competitions and a retrospective exhibit of Canadian fashion curated by Elizabeth Cabral

This milestone event generated exceptional buzz and excitement throughout the fashion community and in the media but more importantly, TFI25 raised almost $100,000 for our non-profit organization – an achievement that has never before been met. Proceeds from TFI25 will be used towards the development and delivery of community programs focussed on innovation, fashion entrepreneurship and small business development. In 2011, TFI helped 625 new and emerging entrepreneurs who created or retained over 930 jobs for the City of Toronto and Canada.
