THE CUT Debuts
An e-Doc series about TFI New Labels 2013

Want to gain some insight into the last New Labels competition to see what it takes to survive the competition and to win?

Check out the first 3 episodes of THE CUT http://fashionation.tv/cut which is an e-doc series based on TFI's New Labels Competition 2013.

The Cut follows several young design hopefuls as they compete to win that coveted spot as the 2013 New Labels winner. The audience is privy to what makes these young artists tick and the creative process they follow to create that winning line in order to wow the judges. Many sleepless nights go into creating a line of clothing that will hopefully catapult one young designer to Canadian fashion stardom. And the stakes couldn’t be any higher! This year the winner received the perfect combination that will make his/her name the new ‘it’ label in Canadian fashion. Our lucky fashion neophyte received $25,000 from fashion philanthropist Suzanne Rogers, a feature in Flare magazine, and a chance to design a line of clothes with Target that will be featured in their stores nationwide in the spring of 2014The stage is set and now the pressure is on to make magic.

The next 4 episodes will be revealed within the next 2 weeks so be sure to check the site often. Remember to study what the judges say and how they react to what’s being presented.

Michael Morris, The Social Strategy Group

Michael Morris, President
The Social Strategy Group

Born in Manchester, England, Michael Morris left college to join Bon Marche, the family owned ladies boutique, and helped expand the business from one store to a 10-store chain in northern England. In 1975, he moved to Canada and was hired by the J. Michaels retail chain as a supervisor for many of their stores. In1978, Michael was instrumental in the opening of Holly's Fashions, one of the most prestigious ladies fashion chains in Canada with locations at Yorkdale Shopping Centre, Eaton Centre, TD Centre and Don Mills Shopping Centre.
After eight successful years as general manager of Holly's, and gaining recognition as a fashion industry expert specializing in buying and merchandising, Michael left Holly's in 1986 and opened his own manufacturing company, producing quality ladies two-piece dressing and sportswear under the Affirmative label, with major distribution throughout department stores, retail chains and several hundred independent specialty stores across North America. He was a pioneer in the development of private label programs for many major retailers in the 80’s, and entered into several licensing arrangements with US fashion companies for distribution in Canada.

Over the years Michael has consulted for several designers including Sunny Choi, creating the successful Sunny Choi Fashion House direct sales concept in 1992. In 1993 Michael formed Casually Yours, introducing workplace fashion shopping events to over 50 hospitals across Southern Ontario. He continues to work with many non-profit organizations as a cause-related marketing consultant to help raise much needed funds for many needy causes.
TFI members can tap into Michael’s extensive industry experience to help launch and grow their fashion businesses. His areas of expertise include: concept and product development, fabric purchasing, fashion merchandising, buying, retail management, private label programs, sales management, cause-related marketing, marketing and advertising.

Why do you need a great press kit?

If you're hoping to get mentioned in the press or catch the eye of a retailer, having a professional press kit is absolutely essential for any business.  You may have a terrific product and an innovative line, but if no one has heard of you and you're not making any sales, you need to change your PR and marketing tactics.

Don't be daunted by the idea of preparing a professional press kit; it's a simple DIY project that will garner you impressive results. Lindsay Singer, is a public relations specialist at Faulhaber Communications and she's sharing DIY tips on how you can create a world-class press kit at our next seminar on July 23, 2013 at 5:30pm. If you'd like to attend, please join us by registering at TFI Shop.

Please hurry! There are only 9 seats left for this presentation.
