Four Designers in Line to Showcase at TFI NEW LABELS® 2015
TORONTO, ON--(Marketwired - February 04, 2015) - Lights will turn down and fashion will turn up on May 4, 2015 when the Toronto Fashion Incubator (TFI) unveils the brightest stars in Canadian fashion at TFI New Labels® 2015. Four impressive semi-finalists are eligible to have their distinct design talent walk the runway during an evening of cocktails, fashion and fundraising. Canada's current bright fashion stars include a CAFA (Canadian Arts & Fashion Awards) nominated and Italian-trained designer; a native Montrealer who previously assisted Vivienne Westwood; a Parsons-trained designer once spotted on Sex in the Citystar, Kim Cattrall; and a former London, UK tailor who has dressed cultural icon Lady Gaga.
Notable members of Toronto's fashion community, along with leading sponsors, Mantella Corporation and the City of Toronto, and exclusive media partners, FLARE and Rogers, will gather at One King West where one designer will be awarded $25,000 for Most Promising New Label, presented by Suzanne Rogers, and a full-page feature in FLARE.
The JudgesThe elite panel of judges that will mentor the four semi-finalists and select who advances to the TFI New Labels® stage, includes:
President, David Dixon Inc., and former TFI New Labels® finalist
Philanthropist and benefactor of the Most Promising New Labels Award
Senior vice president and fashion director for Hudson's Bay and Lord & Taylor
Editor-in-chief of FLARE
The four contemporary womenswear designers in the running to showcase their collections, include: Matthew Gallagher for Maison Matthew Gallagher, Valerie Tolila of Vaiken, Jennifer Torosian and Raed Ali for Jennifer Torosian and Benji Wong Zhen Wang for Benji WZW.
Milan-educated designer Matthew Gallagher for Maison Matthew Gallagher designs for a powerful woman of luxury and refined allure. The FW15 collection finds inspiration in a girl who is torn between reality and fantasy; what she longs for and how it entrances her to become the woman she dreams of.
Montreal-based VAIKEN favours sporty, feminine and sexy silhouettes while embodying the modern woman. VAIKEN's FW15 collection channels French model Caroline de Maigret's eclectic style mixing carefree bohemianism with rocker chic, sophistication with attitude. The line includes fur, leather and embroideries on crisp tops and skin-tight pants.
Jennifer Torosian creates sleek and tailored aesthetics with fine detail, blending clean lines with elements of surprise. Founded by Jennifer Torosian and Raed Ali, the brand has developed a celebrity roster, including actor Kim Cattrall. The FW15 collection mixes sport aesthetics, luxe fabrics, a utilitarian spirit and hints of work wear elements.
High-end streetwear brand Benji WZW combines street tribalism with a narrative sensitivity. Favoured by music superstar Lady Gaga, the line balances power and sensuality, the ugly and the beautiful. The FW15 collection, SACCHARINE GRAVE, tells the story of high school outcasts who idolize the Cross Bones Graveyard in London, UK.
Net ticket sale proceeds from the fashion show will benefit the TFI, a non-profit, community-based, small business centre that provides critical support to fashion entrepreneurs. For tickets, which include a networking social, cocktails and fashion show, please contact TFI firstname.lastname@example.org or 416 971 7117.

If you're worried about someone knocking-off (copying) your designs and ideas YOU HAVE GOOD REASON TO WORRY!
Unethical business practices are unfortunately very common in the fashion industry and if you ever find yourself in a position to defend your original design or trademark, you'll discover that it's WAY more expensive to sue someone than to spend a few dollars upfront to protect yourself.
Take a look at what happened to GRANTED - a hand-knit company based in Richmond, BC:
Another incident that happened to Sentaler, a luxury outerwear firm based in Toronto, was written about in The Globe & Mail. The story, When Imitation Isn't Flattery, chronicles the designer's tale about how she caught her CMT contractor making counterfeit goods using her designs.
Find out how you can prevent these things from happening by attending TFI's seminar on January 26th at 5:30pm. Lawyer Ashlee Froese from Gilbert's LLP will tell you about the fundamentals of protecting your intellectual property, share advice on what you can do now to protect your designs before they're knocked off and what you can do if you've already been copied.
Space is limited so don't delay! Register now. The nominal seminar fee is a tax-deductable business expense and a wise investment that could save you thousands of dollars down the road.
See you at CAFA!
