TFI NEW LABELS WINNER TAKES BARBIE’S CASH

Saturday night five emerging designers threw down at the TFI New Labels show to compete for a $35,000 prize package that included ten grand in cash from Mattel and a $25,000 editorial package from ELLE Canada. The finalists, Anastasia Lomonova, House of Groves, Diepo, Birds of North America, and Paris Li, showcased nine looks plus three little black dresses inspired by Barbie.

After months nurturing these young talents through the creation of their collections, the judges – designer David Dixon, Star columnist Derick Chetty, Adriana Gut of Mattel Canada Inc., Jason Morikawa of Holt Renfrew, stylist Peter Papapetrou and ELLE Canada editor Rita Silvan – took just minutes to determine Anastasia Lomonova of Montreal the winner. If you recall seeing Anastasia’s stunning couture-inspired dress made from Cashmere’s bathroom tissue in 2009, you’ll know she gives new meaning to the phrase “looks great on paper.” Congrats, Anastasia!
