A haven and avid promoter for Canadian clothing labels, the Toronto Fashion Incubator has been championing our best and brightest for years, think Arthur Mendonca, Todd Lynn, and Joeffer Caoc. In 2010 there was clearly some stuff competition in their New Labels gala, co-hosted by Elle Canada, as five up-and-coming design houses took to the stage with select looks of their latest collections to be judged by the best in Canada’s fashion industry. The Toronto Star’s Derick Chetty, designer David Dixon, Jason Morikawa of Holt Renfrew and newly appointed Elle Canada editor-in-chief Noreen Flanagan were among the judges who took 10 minutes to deliberate after the lively runway presentation to decide on a winner. The mostly all black collections from each of the five designer’s – nine looks each from Paris Li, (recently taken on by John Mackay & Co.’s new mentorship program), Ryerson alum and Montreal-based Anastasia Lomonova, House of Groves by Jennifer Waters, Justine Diener and Kristin Poon’s Diepo, (coming off a showing at the 5th annual [FAT]), and Birds of North America by Hayley Gibson – wowed the fashion crowd at the Carlu in downtown Toronto this past weekend. With her collection of crocheted, beaded and draped dresses, title The Morrigan, Anastasia Lomonova won over the panel to take home the grand prize package worth $35,000.
