She's Got Flare: Susan Langdon

September 2006
FLARE MAGAZINE

Susan Langdon
Age: 49
Residence: Toronto
Occupation: Executive Director, Toronto Fashion Incubator

How would you describe your style?: "A yin/yang of strong yet feminine or classic yet quirky - I'd wear pearls and metal chains together." What is your earliest fashion recollection?: "My father's dry-cleaning business. It was a treasure trove of beautiful 1950s organza and tulle dresses." What dictates your style: work, friends or runway?: "Because I work in fashion, there is an expectation to be up on trends and wear the latest thing, but personal style is how you wear it, not simply what you wear." What was your style "a-ha" moment?: "Going from long, curly (permed) '80s hair to short and straight hair was my defining moment." Whose style, past or present, influences you?: "Coco Chanel. She had the confidence to create her own unique style, one that is still appreciated today." Who are your favourite designers?: "Marie Saint Pierre, Rick Owens, Issey Miyake and Donna Karan." Which labels dominate your closet?: "Canadian, of course! Marie Saint Pierre, David Dixon, Joeffer Caoc and Arthur Mendonca." If you could own any item from the fall runways, what would it be?: "Izzy Camilleri's black and cream leather skirt." Where is your favourite shopping destination?: "In Toronto, World Design Lab at Holt Renfrew [on Bloor], Finishing Touches, TNT Woman and San Remo." What do you consider a fashion faux pas?: "Anything that's trashy and/or not age appropriate." What accssory don't you leave home without?: "My Gucci wedding band." What are your basics?: "My Wolford, one-piece tank bodysuit. I can wear it with my Issey Miyake skirt and a wrap cardigan or with my Citizens of Humanity jeans and Lida Baday jacket."
