1. AWARDS & ACHIEVEMENTS
TFI residents, outreach and staff achieved various awards of recognition recently. In New York on September 16, 2015, resident Sid Neigum was named one of the winners of the DHL Exported Program. Marcel Ostertag, Sid Neigum, Atsushi Nakashima and Marta Marques, and Paulo Almeida won the opportunity to grow their businesses and brands internationally by showing their fall/winter 2016 and spring/summer 2017 collections on global fashion week stages. As part of the program, DHL Exported offers business strategy consultancy, PR and social media support to selected talents of the fashion industry keen to further their businesses. Last year's winners of DHL Exported Cycle One took on new markets and reported a significant increase in international coverage and media interest. Francesca Liberatore, who won Cycle One for New York, noted an increase of 400 percent in e-commerce, and Nicholas K, who showed in Milan as part of DHL Exported Cycle One, experienced 50 percent sales growth compared to the year before.

Applications for the DHL Exported program were open from July 8-31 and finalists were chosen by a panel of industry veterans and logistics experts. Designers were asked to select a fashion week stage for presenting their collections based on their business expansion strategy. For each show, a committee of regional experts reviewed the applications and chose the designer that showed the most potential to succeed.

Along with a guaranteed spot on the event’s schedule, Neigum will receive two fully funded and produced runway shows in London, and DHL will also provide logistics advice and cover international shipping and exporting of hard goods related to delivering the collection.

In more award-winning news, at a gala dinner at The Liberty Grand in September, TFI's executive director Susan Langdon, received the Icon of Empowerment award for advancing the careers of women, presented by VWAT Family Services. She also received the Fashion Visionary Award in October presented by Fashion Group International’s Toronto chapter for her dedication and contributions to Canada's fashion industry. “Susan, a long-time member of FGI and executive director of TFI, works tirelessly to provide emerging fashion designers with guidance and opportunity. She is an incredible asset to the Canadian fashion industry,” said Ashlee Froese, co-chair of FGI Toronto and a mentor with TFI. “I'm absolutely thrilled to be recognized by FGI Toronto! I can't express how grateful I am to receive this very prestigious award; one that recognizes my efforts to advance the careers and businesses of Canada's next generation of emerging talent and to my commitment of investing in the future of Canada's fashion industry,” said Langdon. “My motto has always been to 'lead by example' so I hope that this very special honour will inspire others to follow suit and to follow my lead." Fashion Group International was founded in New York City in 1930 by former VOGUE Editor-in-Chief Edna Woolman Chase with founding members including Elizabeth Arden, Eleanor Roosevelt and Helena Rubinstein to promote and benefit the fashion industry. The FGI mission is to be the pre-eminent authority on the business of fashion and design and to help its members become more effective in their careers.

Also this fall, three TFI outreach members were named as the top finalists in TFI's FASHION YOUR FUTURE accessory business competition and program. The inaugural FASHION YOUR FUTURE program was an initiative developed to engage youth who want to start a fashion accessory business in the Canadian market. Funded by the Government of Ontario as part of the Youth Jobs Strategy, and supported by the City of Toronto, the program began with an 18-day fashion boot camp followed by an intensive 15-day mentorship program. Attendees learned how to develop a cohesive accessory line, source materials, learned about strategic business elements including: pricing, business planning, trade show prep, and critical thinking. The top three finalists, Serean Bechara, Agata Pieniek and Suzy Yahya, will debut their spring 2016 collections at TFI's Press & Buyers Trade Show taking place October 21 and 22 at World MasterCard Fashion Week in Toronto.
