1. FASHION YOUR FUTURE KICKS OFF
Ready. Set. Work. Toronto Fashion Incubator (TFI) announces a new, free, fashion entrepreneurship program for aspiring accessory designers between the ages of 20 and 29. Launching July 20, 2015, TFI’s FASHION YOUR FUTURE (#TFIFYF) rolls out in three phases to introduce youth to all aspects of starting and developing a successful fashion business.
FASHION YOUR FUTURE is an initiative projected to engage 60 youth who want to start a fashion accessory business in the Canadian market. Youth are encouraged to register for a free information session to learn more about the program.

Funded by the Government of Ontario as part of the Youth Jobs Strategy, and supported by the City of Toronto, #TFIFYF will begin with an 18-day fashion boot camp. Attendees will learn how to develop an accessory line, source materials, visit designer studios and learn about strategic business elements including: pricing, business planning, trade show prep, and critical thinking. From the boot camp, 10 top youth will be chosen to participate in phase two and produce a spring 2016 accessory collection with help from a mentor and a TFI micro grant. In phase three, the top three collections will be featured in TFI's Press & Buyers Trade Show taking place October 21 and 22 at World MasterCard Fashion Week in Toronto.
“FASHION YOUR FUTURE is a fantastic new addition to TFI's program portfolio," said Susan Langdon, Executive Director of Toronto Fashion Incubator. "It offers money, mentorship and market opportunities to youth interested in launching an accessory business. And it's all for free!"

TFI will once again be hosting its seasonal tradeshow under the tents at David Pecaut Square in Toronto October 21 - 22 from 12:00 - 2:00pm, during World MasterCard Fashion Week. Canadian designers of apparel and accessories are invited to apply for the two-day tradeshow that targets retail buyers and fashion media.
"I've been attending this breakfast for several years now and I feel that every season gets better and better," said Michelle Germain, buyer for Shopgirls boutique. "I love meeting the designers in person, it helps me connect with the brand better which in turn helps me sell the brand in a more meaningful way to my clients. I've picked up a few new designers at this event and will surely continue to do so. It's always a well edited selection of designers which makes my job even easier."

TFI's long time office manager, Nina Facciolo, gave birth to a baby girl at 10:10am on June 23, 2015. Nina left TFI for maternity leave on June 20 and is expected to return in a year. Accessory Mentors & Trainers WANTED
TFI is hiring accessory mentors and trainers for its new Fashion Your Future youth entrepreneurship program. If you're an experienced professional with teaching experience, and if you're a TFI member, we're looking for trainers to teach youth about branding, sales & marketing, public relations, social media, preparing a business plan, costing all different types of accessories, and options for selling your line (wholesale, retail, online). To apply, please send your resume to HR at TFI. Be sure to highlight which topic you'd like to teach. We're offering trainers $50/hr. Time commitment varies depending on the topic. If you're a TFI member and an experienced accessory maker, if you make your products locally and have a workspace studio in Toronto that's accessible by TTC, we're looking for mentors to help youth develop and produce a sample line for spring 2016. Please send your resume to HR at TFI. We're offering mentors $150/day for 15 days of one-one-one mentoring. Chatelaine magazine has promoted Lianne George, its editorial director, to the position of editor-in-chief replacing Karine Ewart who held the position since January 2014. Hudson's Bay Buys Germany’s Galeria Kaufhof
On June 15, 2015, Hudson's Bay Company (HBC) announced it had purchased Germany's Galeria Kaufhof retail chain, Belgium's Galeria Inno stores and other real estate holdings from Metro AG for €2.82B (C$3.357 billion). Mr. Richard Baker, Governor and Executive Chairman of HBC, said: "These are exciting transactions that demonstrate our proven growth formula in action: improving solid retail operations, unlocking the value of real estate and growing through acquisitions." While it's unknown if any of the locations will be converted to Hudson Bay stores, Baker indicated that there was an opportunity to bring Saks Fifth Avenue and Saks Off 5th to Germany. Kaufhof is the number one German department store by market share, with 103 Galeria Kaufhof locations and 16 Sportarena stores. Kaufhof also operates Belgium's only department store with 16 Galeria INNO locations across the country. Kaufhof has exceptional store locations on high-streets in densely populated and prosperous cities throughout Germany, the largest economy in Europe and fourth largest in the world, and in prime locations across Belgium. Acclaimed Fashion Documentary True Cost Premieres In Toronto
Fresh from the Cannes Film Festival and screenings in London, New York and Los Angeles, director Andrew Morgan’s fashion documentary The True Cost will premiere in Toronto on June 24, 2015. Backed by a stellar international production team including Livia Firth, Lucy Siegle, Michael Ross and Laura Piety, the film has garnered strong industry reactions and public interest on both sides of the Atlantic. Co-hosted by the fashion industry non-profit group Fashion Takes Action and Ryerson University’s School of Fashion, The True Cost comes to Toronto at a critical time for local brands and apparel retailers. In recent years, the fashion industry has been under extreme scrutiny for its negative social and environmental impacts, culminating on April 24th, 2013 with the collapse of the Rana Plaza factory in Bangladesh. With the Canadian government now looking closely at ethical procurement guidelines, and the recent class action suits against Wal-Mart and Loblaw Companies tied to the deaths at Rana Plaza, the release of this gritty behind-the-scenes documentary could not be timelier. The True Cost Toronto premiere takes place June 24, 6:00pm at Ryerson’s Ted Rogers School of Management, Building 55, Dundas St West Lecture Theatre TRS1067. DX Launches Emerging Designer Competition
Calling all Canadian designers between the ages of 18 and 35: The Design Exchange (DX) is launching an Emerging Designer Competition open to designers working in digital, interior and graphic design, architecture and fashion. Submit your portfolio of realized and soon-to-be-completed projects, have your work juried by a star-studded jury of Canadian and international design, culture and business leaders and exhibit your work at Canada's design museum! ROM Exhibition Honoured By CSA
Fashion Follows Form: Designs for Sitting, an original exhibition of the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM), has been honoured with the Richard Martin Exhibition Award from the Costume Society of America (CSA). The ROM exhibition, highlighting renowned Canadian designer Izzy Camilleri’s fashionable, functional—and affordable—designs for women and men who use wheelchairs, was awarded by a seven-person jury in a highly unusual, unanimous decision. In announcing the award, the jury stated that the exhibition featured “…beautifully written text that was respectful of the audience, like the designer is respectful of her clients…” On display from June 21, 2014 until January 25, 2015 in the ROM’s Patricia Harris Gallery of Textiles & Costume, Fashion Follows Form was curated by the Museum’s Nora E. Vaughan Fashion Costume Senior Curator, Dr. Alexandra Palmer following a chance discovery of Camilleri’s storefront.
Dogs On The Catwalk?
Baycrest and Canada Pooch are teaming up for a Dogs on the Catwalk contest! Amazon.ca is making it easy for Canadians to find the perfect outfit with the launch of its Clothing and Shoes online stores. Featuring more than 1.5 million items, the Amazon.ca Clothing and Shoes stores offer a wide selection of apparel and accessories, from tried-and-true heritage brands like Levi's and Dockers to contemporary fashion brands like 7 For All Mankind, True Religion, Vince Camuto, French Connection, Joe's Jeans and more. The women's clothing selection houses classic and on-trend options such as popular denim options, women's dresses, office-ready looks, everyday tees and other wardrobe essentials. In the men's clothing department, customers will find casual t-shirts and dark denim, sport coats and dress pants, workout wear and more. Canada's Loblaw & Joe Fresh Sued For $2B
Canadian supermarket giant Loblaw Co. and its Joe Fresh apparel brand are being sued for $2B CA by a Toronto law firm acting on behalf of the survivors and family members of garment workers who died in the 2013 Rana Plaza factory collapse in Bangladesh. More than 1,100 workers lost their lives, many of whom were women earning less than $1 CA a day while producing Joe Fresh clothing. Filed in Ontario Superior Court by Rochon Genova LLP in April 2015, just before the disaster's second anniversary, the notice of action alleges Loblaw was aware that prior to April 2013, Bangladesh factories had a poor record of workplace safety standards and industrial building standards. The notice of action also names Loblaw's parent company George Weston and the US, France and Bangladesh branches of Bureau Veritas Consumer Products Services, a company hired by Loblaw to perform inspections and audits of textile and garment factories. Kevin Groh, vice-president of corporate affairs at Loblaw Companies Ltd., said in a statement: "We believe that this claim is without merit and intend to vigorously defend our position."
Google Launches Project Jacquard
In partnership with US denim giant Levi's, Google has launched Project Jacquard, a new project which aims to weave touch-sensitive technology into traditional textiles such as cotton, polyester or silk. Using standard, industrial looms and new conductive yarns made from thin, metallic alloys in a wide range of colours, the resulting fabrics can be woven into textiles and made into interactive apparel. Interactive garments could allow people to send text messages by simply swiping a sensor grid embedded into jacket cuff or collar. SHOES: PLEASURE AND PAIN Opens at the V&A
From June 13, 2015 to January 31, 2016, shoe lovers will enjoy exploring the transformative power of footwear from around the world as over 200 pairs of the most extreme shoes will be on display at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. This exhibition highlights the obsession shoes can inspire and brings together exceptional footwear from the latest innovations to a dazzling range of historic shoes, many displayed for the first time. Just In Thyme
Maternity retailer Thyme has created a digitally-savvy prototype outlet at its Yorkdale Shopping Centre location. Charging stations in change rooms and a 360 degree interactive mirror are two features of the newly renovated space. Parent company Reitmans is adding two more similarly outfitted locations this year, one in Ottawa and the other in Lachenale, Quebec.
Chinese Workers Oppose Factory Relocation
About 900 garment workers have been on strike since June 8, 2015 at a garment contractor in Shenzhen, China. The workers are protesting the factory's proposed relocation to Vietnam where labour cost is cheaper. The factory produces clothing for Uniglo, Theory and Helmut Lang.
By January 31, 2016, there will be 250 fewer employees at Gap's head office in San Francisco and 140 fewer Gap stores in North America. The struggling apparel retailer will close thirty-five more stores after that. Fast-fashion retailer Joe Fresh is closing all of its U.S. stores and recently ended its retail partnership with JC Penney and J.Crew recently laid off 175 employees from its New York office. But according to Randy Harris, retail analyst with Trendex North America, Canada's retail market will begin to stabilize starting July 1, 2015. Speaking in a webinar presentation on June 18, 2015, hosted by the Canadian Apparel Federation, Harris predicted some good and bad key retail trends. With Target Canada's massive exit this spring, vendors will find it almost impossible to negotiate prices with behemoth discounter Walmart. In the luxury market, Harris predicted that menswear retailer Harry Rosen will thrive while Holt Renfrew will need to launch an e-commerce site in order to remain competitive with Nordstom and Saks Fifth Avenue. Overall, Harris thinks by 2018 there will be too many high-end stores chasing too few customers which may result in a cannibalism of market share. Off-price retailers like Off-Fifth and Beyond The Rack will grow over the next two years as will online sales which grew by 18.8% in 2014 from the year before. Private label will increase, foreign competitors will continue to enter the Canadian market, active sportswear and menswear will outpace women's apparel sales however womenswear will still dominate the market. UP Express Takes Flight
Toronto's long awaited express train service from Union Station to Pearson Airport finally became a reality on June 6, 2015 when the UP (Union-Pearson) Express started running. Promising to get travellers to or from Canada's busiest airport hub in 25 minutes, guests will be greeted by stylish staff outfitted by Canadian designer Matt Robinson. Robinson is founder of menswear label Klaxon Howl whose Queen West store is known for tailored suits and separates with a vintage-inspired twist. His men's and women's uniforms for the new rail service include a fitted jacket in dark green with dark brown accents, a coordinated vest, pants and a pencil skirt. Customer service staff will also be sporting retro-inspired hats designed by Robinson. Men will sport the "Bancroft", a cap resembling those worn by 19th-century rail conductors and women will wear the "Military Wedge" that mixes air force and Girl Scout inspirations.
Square One's Blueprint To Glamour
Square One Shopping Centre, located in Mississauga, Ontario, is aiming to rival Toronto's Yorkdale Shopping Centre as the premier fashion destination mall in Canada. High-end specialty retailers Holt Renfew and Simons will open at Square One in 2016 and another 75,000 sq. ft. of space will be dedicated to "aspirational and luxury brands".
