1. 14 Hot Canadian Brands You Need To Watch
Get ready to meet Canada's hottest emerging apparel and accessories brands at TFI's Spring 2015 Press & Buyers tradeshow. Taking place at World MasterCard® Fashion Week October 22 and 23, 2014, the 14 juried collections run the gamut from jewellery to men's footwear to dresses and more. Exhibitors include TFI New Labels® 2014 winner AliceAzur, Granaté Prêt, Jennifer Torosian, L'Momo, Brit Wacher, OPPELLE Inc., Jon De Porter Jewelry, Laurie Fleming, NAEVE, Mizdragonfly, Janine de Dorigny, Louis Mile Designs, Blanc de Noir, and Zarucci.

The range of exhibitors, primarily from Ontario and Quebec, include one designer from Philadelphia's Fashion Incubator who is participating in a cultural and business exchange program with TFI. Last year, TFI participated in a similar exchange with Chicago's Fashion Incubator.

Retail buyers and fashion media are invited to register with Faulhaber Communications before October 9, 2014, for this invitation-only event. 2. TOM*FW Makes Its Debut
From August 12 - 14, 2014, Toronto welcomed its first men’s fashion week, the world’s eighth runway platform exclusively featuring menswear designs.

Held at the Fairmont Royal York hotel, the ambitious first season of TOM* Fashion Week (TOM*FW) boasted 17 designer shows, the Men'sFashion4Hope Celebrity Charity Fundraiser, the first-ever Emerging Menswear Design Award (EMDA), a Wearable Technology runway show, a TOM* Talks panel discussion hosted by Fashion Group International (FGI) Toronto and a Digital Lounge that featured interactive wearable technology exhibits and demos by start-up fashion apps.

Designers, editors and consumers from around the world attended the inaugural event that included designers Noel Crisostomo from the Philippines, Paulo Succar from Mexico, TOTHEM from Italy and Paul Nathapol from Thailand. Foreign press included contributors from Vogue L'Uomo, Forbes Magazine, British GQ and Bullett Magazine NYC.

The Men'sFashion4Hope Celebrity Charity Fundraiser presented by GotStyle featured celebrities and industry leaders walking the runway in the latest in menswear trends by GotStyle retail boutique to raise money for the Kol Hope Foundation for Children to benefit SickKids Hospital Toronto. Celebrity walkers included recording artist Shawn Desman, Canadian top model Paul Mason, Canadian boxing legend George Chuvalo, music legend Jarvis Church, Canadian Olympic medalist Dylan Moscovitch, Etalk Canada's Devon Soltendieck, Tim Warmels from The Bachelor, Steven Sabados & Chris Hyndman of CBC's Steven & Chris Show, on-air personality Glenn Dixon & his brother, designer David Dixon, Carlos Bustamante from The Next Star, designer Christopher Bates and many more.

The highlight of TOM*FW was the EMDA show. After five finalists showed their spring/summer 2015 collections one winner was chosen. "TOM* would like to congratulate the first-ever EMDA winner, Joao Paulo Guedes, for winning the coveted award and $10,000 cash prize,” said TOM*FW founder Jeff Rustia. “Congratulations also goes to the 4 other finalists Andrew Coimbra, Rani Kim, Som Kong and Patrick Salonga for showcasing such awe-inspiring S/S 2015 collections." Present at the award ceremony were competition judges, David Dixon, Canadian fashion designer; Susan Langdon, TFI executive director; Adrian Mainella, president of The Aesthete, a boutique content marketing firm; and Rick Williams, president of World Financial Group Canada.

Guedes won over the judges with his tightly edited collection of impeccably tailored jackets and separates. Inspired by a recent trip to India, the designer digitally photographed, computer-manipulated and printed a collage of Indian architecture and patterns onto natural fabrics such as cotton shirting and twill. Accessorized with gold necklaces, Guedes presented a line that was innovative yet marketable. Andrew Coimbra was a strong contender in the EMDA competition with his line of casual streetwear custom-printed with images of northern Canada and Lake Superior. Although printed in pastel shades of pale blue and peach on white, the look was decidedly urban and youthful.

In addition the jam-packed week of fashion events Toronto Men's Fashion Week launched its own full-color, glossy print, 120-page printed TOM* Magazine that will be available at Chapters and Indigo stores starting in September.

Glasgow-born, Toronto-based, Gail McInnes (below, top left) has been involved in the fashion industry for more than 16 years. She brings her inherent Scottish charm, expertise and insider knowledge to her role as the fashion host for TDot TV. She is also the owner of the publicity agency Magnet Creative Management, co-owner of the celebrity fashion showroom Stylist Box, and a freelance fashion reporter having written for FLARE.com, MarketWire’s Market Wired blog, The Huffington Post, Global News, Revive magazine, and more. Her in-depth view and opinions into the world of style is often called upon for various television appearances, including CBC News, Global TV’s The Morning Show, CTV Newsnet, Tele-Journal, MTV Live, CosmoTV’s Oh So Cosmo, Slice Network’s X-Weighted and Party Mamas. McInnes gained international recognition when she was nominated in 2011 as “Communicator of the Year” by the prestigious Scottish Fashion Awards, in association with VOGUE.com. McInnes also devotes her extra time to furthering the careers of the next generation of fashion entrepreneurs through working with organizations such as Youth Employment Services (YES), the Toronto Fashion Incubator (TFI), and as a guest speaker and judge at various colleges and universities.

Anita Pastor (below, top right) is the Kleinfeld Bridal buyer at Hudson’s Bay Co., responsible for sourcing and purchasing an assortment of international bridal gowns along with accessories, veils, shoes, jewellery, millinery and gifts. Her expertise includes selecting profitable and fashion-forward merchandise, winning negotiation strategies, relationship development skills and the ability to direct merchandising teams to create exemplary merchandising practices. These abilities combine passion, innovation, and teamwork to create a superior shopping experience. Prior to joining Kleinfeld, Pastor was the buyer for fine china, casual dinnerware and table linens at Hudson’s Bay Co., creative director/buyer at Barrymore Furniture, and buyer/merchandising manager at Decorium. Pastor will be starting as a TFI mentor in September 2014.

As a lawyer, partner and trademark agent at Gilbert’s LLP in Toronto, Ashlee Froese (below, bottom left) brings a breadth of experience in a variety of industries with respect to managing and protecting their brands domestically and internationally. She also assists in creating strategies for the planning and execution of brand protection strategies. Her keen interest in assisting fashion entrepreneurs protect their creative ingenuity is evident on her website www.canadafashionlaw.com, a site that examines laws affecting the fashion industry from a Canadian perspective. Froese is also a board member of Fashion Group International Toronto and sits on the Board of Advisors for Ryerson University’s Fashion Zone. She is a frequent guest speaker and published author on trademarks, domain name and branding law. She has lectured at law schools, universities, cultural institutions, law societies and industry associations throughout North America and she’s been published in numerous magazines and academic publications. Froese obtained a B.A. (Hons) from the University of Toronto and subsequently interned with the United Nations Development Programme in the Middle East. Froese obtained her LL.B. from Osgoode Hall Law School.

Christian Dare (above, bottom right) is the merchandising director and co-owner of the celebrity fashion showroom Stylist Box. Dare spent most of his formative years living and working in Canada’s major cultural and fashion centres: Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal, supplemented by stints in Ottawa and Halifax. This coast-to-coast exposure of Canada and Canadian consumerism allows Dare to understand the localized challenges for designers and offer solutions on how to overcome them. Dare has worked within fashion retail for over 15 years, where he quickly worked his way up from in-store stylist to national visual merchandising manager. He has worked for the Gap, Club Monaco, Ralph Lauren, H&M and Holt Renfrew. These experiences have informed his visionary approach to fashion retail. With all this under his belt, and a Masters in Fashion Branding/Creative Direction, Dare is ready to foster and propel Canadian designers and brands forward.

MBSU REGIONAL FINALISTS ANNOUNCED
The spring 2015 Mercedes-Benz Start Up (MBSU) fashion design semi-finals wrapped up in Burlington, Ontario, on August 21 when the last of its regional semi-finalists was chosen. Judges Carolyn Quinn, IMG, Robin Kay, FDCC, and JoAnne Caza, Mercedes-Benz, chose TFI resident Sid Neigum as the Ontario regional winner. Neigum will face Valerie Tolila (Quebec) and Eliza Faulkner (British Columbia) at World MasterCard Fashion Week in October 2014 in a runway challenge. New this year, the winner will receive $30,000, mentorship and a feature in Fashion magazine. Neigum was the winner of TFI’s New Labels fashion competition in 2012 where he won $25,000 from TFI supporter Suzanne Rogers and a full-page spread in FLARE magazine.

INDUSTRY BIBLE SOLD
American publishing giant Condé Nast is selling Women’s Wear Daily (WWD), Footwear News and M Magazine to Penske Media Corp. The deal also includes the sale of Fairchild Summits and its events business. WWD, a daily online and print trade journal reporting on fashion industry news, is known as the “bible” of the fashion industry and a “must-read” for anyone in the business. It was founded in 1910 by Edmund Fairchild and sold to Condé Nast in 1999. Penske Media Corp. owns Variety, Hollywood Life and websites Variety411.com and BollywoodLife.com. The deal is expected to close next month.

CHICO’S OPENS IN ONTARIO
U.S. womenswear retailer Chico’s opened three Ontario locations in August. The stores are located at Square One Shopping Centre in Mississauga, Upper Canada Mall in Newmarket, and Mapleview Centre in Burlington. Prior to the launch, Chico’s earnings had fallen almost one third in the second quarter this year due to discounted unloading of surplus stock. The Chico's brand was founded in 1983 as a boutique selling Mexican folk art and cotton sweaters from a store on Florida's Sanibel Island. Today, Chico's sells exclusively designed, private-branded clothing for the missy market. As of March 31, 2014, Chico's operated over 600 boutiques and over 100 outlets across the U.S., the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and Mexico. Chico's also publishes a monthly catalogue and offers online shopping at www.chicos.com.

JACOBS CLOSING
Canadian chain store Jacobs recently closed its 92 stores after 35 years of retailing. According to the Financial Post, the Montreal-based womenswear company cited stiff competition from international cheap chic fashion giants such as Zara, H&M, Forever 21 and Aeropostale, all of which sell apparel at lower price points.

CATWALK 2 CLOSET
Catwalk 2 Closet (C2C) is an innovative new consumer show selling samples and overstock from designer and high-end labels at wholesale or better prices. The inaugural show takes place October 23 to 26, 2014, at The Direct Energy Centre in Toronto. Up to 100 women’s and men’s outerwear, separates, accessories, jewellery and shoe vendors will be among the initial exhibitors. C2C president Paul Lindzon is a 35-year fashion industry veteran with experience in import manufacturing and designer branding. Two of his notable protégés include Canadian designers Alfred Sung and Dominic Bellissimo. Lindzon expects 15,000 to 20,000 consumers to attend the shopping event.

NORDSTROM GEARS UP FOR CALGARY DEBUT
It’s been two years since high-end U.S. retailer Nordstrom revealed plans for a Canadian expansion but on September 19, Calgary’s Chinook Centre will finally welcome Canada’s first Nordstrom location. Karen McKibbin, president, Nordstrom Canada, says that it’s taking a deliberately slow approach to entering the Canadian market, opening five more stores over the next two-and-a-half years. According to The Globe and Mail, McKibbon alludes to consumer complaints of empty shelves and high prices when discounter Target rapidly launched 124 outlets across Canada in 2013. “We’ve worked really hard in ensuring we have the proper people and the proper tools in place to ensure that we don’t disappoint customers when they visit us.” The next Nordstrom store will open in Ottawa in March 2015, followed by Vancouver in September.

SINGING ICONS TEAM UP FOR H&M
Discount retailer H&M has scored a holiday hit by signing Lady Gaga and Tony Bennett to star in a holiday ad campaign. The Grammy award-winning duo will also sing a tune from their new collaborative album, which will be released in September.

BARNEYS SETTLES RACIAL PROFILING CLAIM
Luxury clothing retailer Barneys New York, has agreed to pay US$525,000 to resolve allegations in a racial profiling lawsuit filed by shoppers and ex-employees. Allegedly, in-store detectives targeted and followed minorities at the flagship Madison Avenue location because they were singled out as suspected shoplifters, even after sales staff identified customers as frequent patrons. The troubles began in March 2013 when a new chief of security was hired to curb loss and theft. In addition to paying legal fees and fines, Barneys has agreed to hire an anti-profiling consultant for two years and to provide re-training for security and sales staff.

STYLING MINNIE MOUSE AT WORLD MASTERCARD FASHION WEEK
Disney Consumer Products Canada recently announced its sponsorship of this fall’s World MasterCard Fashion Week in Toronto. As part of the sponsorship, Mercedes-Benz Start Up finalists have been asked to design one look inspired by Minnie Mouse. You can see the designs at a Minnie-themed fashion installation set up at David Pecaut Square during fashion week, where a winner will be chosen. More details about the program will be available at a later date.

PARKS CANADA LAUNCHES CASUALWEAR COLLECTION
Parks Canada Original is a new line of Canadian-made casualwear for men and women. The t-shirts, long-sleeve shirts, pullovers, hooded sweatshirts, half-zip and full-zip cotton jackets, feature vintage nature logos such as the Parks beaver seen on its signs in the ‘70s, moose and pine trees. Canadian designer Roger Edwards is creative director. He has more than 40 years experience in the apparel industry, which includes a number of high-profile sports clients such as the NHL, NFL, NBA and Team Canada. The collection is available exclusively at Hudson’s Bay locations in the Toronto and Vancouver airports, its Banff store, as well as online at www.thebay.com. A portion of sales will go to support Parks Canada programs and places, which was hit by deep funding cuts in 2012.

CANADIAN ON U.S. PROJECT RUNWAY

TORONTO ANNOUNCES $5,000 START-UP GRANT
The City of Toronto recently launched Starter Company, a new program that offers a $5,000 non-repayable grant to Canadian entrepreneurs aged 18 to 29 who are starting a new business or expanding an existing one. The program also includes one-on-one mentorship, business advice, help with developing a business plan and other resources. Find more information online at www.1toronto.ca.

THE POLITICS OF FASHION
From September 18 to January 25, 2015, at the Design Exchange, Politics of Fashion/Fashion of Politics will explore fashion as a communication tool and marks the curatorial debut of Canadian fashion icon Jeanne Beker. This provocative topic will take visitors through a thematic journey featuring works from celebrated designers such as Hussein Chalayan, Jeremy Scott, Moschino, Stella McCartney, Mary Quant, Alexander McQueen, Jean Paul Gaultier and Canadian designer Rad Hourani. CANADIAN WINS FIRST LVMH AWARD
Congratulations to London-based, Canadian designer Thomas Tait who won first prize in the inaugural LVMH Young Fashion Designer Prize. Competition was stiff; over 1200 international designers applied for a chance to win a cash prize of 300,000 euros and a year of coaching from LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton executives. The global competition was open to designers between the ages of 18 and 40 who have presented and sold at least two collections of women’s or men’s ready-to-wear. An esteemed panel of judges, which included industry heavyweights Karl Lagerfeld, Marc Jacobs, Nicolas Ghesquière, Raf Simons, Phoebe Philo and Riccardo Tisci, along with Kenzo’s Humberto Leon, chose Tait based on his talent, creativity and potential for development. Tait graduated from Montreal’s Collège LaSalle before earning an M.A. in fashion from London’s Central Saint Martins. Two runners-up, New York designer Shayne Oliver of Hood by Air, and Mumbai-based design siblings Nikita and Tina Sutradhar, each received 100,000 euros plus a year of mentoring. The other finalists were CG by Chris Gelinas, Gabriele Colangelo, Simon Porte Jacquemus, Tillmann Lauterbach, Tim Coppens, Simone Rocha, Vika Gazinskaya, and Suno by Erin Beatty and Max Osterweis.

CANADA PHILIPPINE FASHION WEEK
The second annual Canada Philippine Fashion Week (CPFW) took place the week of June 9, 2014, at the Royal York hotel in Toronto. The weeklong festival included a textile display exhibiting modern and traditional Philippine textiles, a model of the year competition for men and women, runway shows featuring 25 designers and a gala fundraiser to benefit the Kol Hope Foundation for Children. Highlights of CPFW included frothy, fluid gowns in sherbet shades like watermelon and lime from TFI alum and Canadian ex-pat Noel Crisostomo, intricately layered coats by Joel Escober, “Athena”-themed looks featuring hardware trim by Jontie Martinez and embellished eveningwear by designer Francis Libiran, Manilla’s top fashion designer, who has dressed supermodel Tyra Banks among other celebrities. CPFW was founded by Jeff Rustia, one of the most successful names in the Filipino-Canadian community. A former MTV Asia executive and television producer, Rustia is also the founder of TOM*FW, Toronto’s first men’s fashion week.

PASSION FOR FASHION KICKS OFF YEAR SIX
Now in its 6th year, this exciting program gives youth (aged 16 to 29) the opportunity to explore the world of fashion entrepreneurship for FREE. Three business workshops and three fashion workshops cover topics such as design, public relations, marketing, business planning, pricing, operations and set-up. Participants who complete all six workshops qualify to win either the Passion For Fashion or Eveleen Dollery Awards, each offering $1,000 cash. FASHION VICTIMS REJOICE
A fascinating exhibit on display at Toronto's Bata Shoe Museum takes a look at what women, and men, endured for the sake of beauty and fashion. Fashion Victims: The Pleasures and Perils of Dress in the 19th Century, co-curated by the museum's senior curator Elizabeth Semmelhack and Ryerson University associate professor Alison Matthews, features items dyed with arsenic to achieve a stunning but poisonous hue, hats lined with a substance laced with mercury, which literally led to the expression "mad hatter", impossibly narrow shoes and highly flammable hair combs. LIDA BADAY CARRIES ON
There's some good news in the wake of Canadian designer Lida Baday's apparel line closure in June. The company plans to carry on, and expand, its sale of fabrics and notions from its existing location at 70 Claremont St. in Toronto. DOCUMENTARY EXPOSES DENIM MANUFACTURING IMPACTS ON GLOBAL RIVERS
Filmmakers Launch 30-Day Crowdfunding Campaign

How dirty are your blue jeans? This is the question that filmmakers behind the Canadian feature documentary RiverBlue are asking. The film, an around-the-world journey by river through the eyes of internationally acclaimed river advocate Mark Angelo, takes a look at the devastating environmental effects of the denim, textile and tannery industries in China, India and Indonesia. Gemini award-winning director David McIlvride and Gemini-nominated director of photography Roger Williams are involved in the soon-to-be-released documentary. FASHION FOLLOWS FORM AT THE ROM
Fashion Follows Form: Designs for Sitting is a new exhibition at the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) featuring selected works from internationally acclaimed, Toronto-based designer Izzy Camilleri’s IZ Adaptive collection. The exhibition showcases Camilleri’s innovative, fashionable, functional and affordable designs that are among the first in the world created exclusively to meet the needs of women and men who use wheelchairs. Included in the exhibition is a Camilleri-designed leather jacket, trench coat, wedding dress, and tuxedo — all of which defy traditional design and pattern-making conventions. Displayed alongside Camilleri’s designs are 18th and 19th century fashions from the ROM’s renowned collection, also created for a seated, L-shaped body. Fashion Follows Form also features some of Camilleri's iconic designs including the silver fox coat worn by Meryl Streep in The Devil Wears Prada (2006). Fashion Follows Form is on display from June 21, 2014, until January 25, 2015, in the Patricia Harris Gallery of Textiles & Costume. The Royal Ontario Museum is located at 100 Queen's Park in Toronto.

DSW HITS GTA IN AUGUST
On August 7, 2014, Town Shoes Limited opened its first of two DSW Designer Shoe Warehouse locations in Canada at the Heartland Centre in Mississauga. The second location will open at Woodland Hills in Newmarket, Ontario. Each location is approximately 20,000 square feet in size and offers more than 22,000 pairs to choose from including brands such as Nine West, Ralph Lauren, Sam Edelman, Cole Haan, Steve Madden, Clarks, Skechers, Converse, Nike, New Balance, Keds, Lacoste and Coach. There will also be product exclusives to the Canadian retail stores, along with the coveted savings of up to 40% off suggested retail prices on much of the featured collection and up to 70% off in the clearance department. Lovers of pop culture, music and costume are likely to descend on Cleveland, Ohio, where a fashion exhibit centred on Beyonce will debut at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum. Included in the display will be the singer’s body suit, skirt and jacket from last year’s Super Bowl performance, looks from her Single Ladies music video and a Givenchy gown worn to the 2012 Met Gala. The museum also houses items, records and memorabilia from Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees such as Michael Jackson, The Everly Brothers and The Beatles. South of the border, the new Sunday Styles editor and columnist at The New York Times is Katie Rosman, formerly with The Wall Street Journal, and Kim Friday, formerly senior fashion editor at WWD, has been named editorial director at Tommy Hilfiger. Closer to home, weekly magazine The Grid TO suddenly ceased publication in July, Natasha Mekhail former editor for luxury brands (custom publications for Fairmont, Mercedes-Benz and Bombardier) has been promoted to editor-in-chief at global content agency Spafax, and Adam Cholewa, former associate art director at The Grid, Macleans, Chatelaine and Toro magazines, has joined enRoute magazine as art director.

RETAIL RUNDOWN
On July 11, 2014, RAC boutique in Yorkville announced that it would be closing after four successful years at 124 Cumberland St. While a reason for the closure was not cited in the press announcement, RAC co-founders Glenna Weddle and Faith Orfus, promise surprise pop-ups and other guerrilla retail events, along with maintaining its online shop at www.racboutique.com. South of the border, JC Penney is closing 33 stores and laying off 2,000 employees, while Abercrombie & Fitch will shutter 220 stores by the end of 2015. In New York, discount clothier Loehmann’s will be closing all stores and American Eagle Outfitters will close 150 locations through to 2017. COUNTERFEIT CRIMES
Counterfeit Crimes: Are You Part of the Black Market? is a new, five-year exhibit on display now at the Crime Museum in Washington, D.C. Organized by the International AntiCounterfeiting Coalition and National Intellectual Property Rights Coordination Center, the interactive display gives attendees an opportunity to learn and test their knowledge on real versus fake merchandise. In addition, the exhibition also examines the negative impact of counterfeit goods on our health (think lead paint and choking hazards) and on the organized crime consumers are unwittingly funding through their purchases of knock-offs. According to a WWD report, apparel and accessories are among the top counterfeit products seized by federal officials in the U.S. In 2013, officials made 9,894 seizures of counterfeit apparel and accessories, valued at US$116.1 million. LATIN FASHION WEEK IN TORONTO
Toronto will play host to Latin Fashion Week October 24 - 26, 2014. The three-day event will showcase over 40 Canadian and international designers from Mexico, Peru, Colombia, Chile and Brazil at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. WHAT'S NEW WITH BARBIE
She’s been a model, a nurse, an airline hostess and even a U.S. President. Now at age 55, Barbie has started her own business. Dressed in a form-fitted hot pink sheath and carrying a briefcase and tablet, Mattel’s Entrepreneur Barbie is meant to inspire young girls to follow their dreams and become their own boss. To further encourage youth entrepreneurship, Mattel has announced the Barbie Business Bursary Program where three budding Canadian entrepreneurs under the age of 18 will each receive $2,500 to fund their winning business idea. In more Barbie news, the iconic doll has teamed up with Chanel designer and creative director, Karl Lagerfeld. The collaboration will see Barbie dressed in the designer's signature "uniform": fitted black pantsuit with high-collared white shirt and accessorized with black sunglasses. No word on whether Choupette, Lagerfeld's much beloved pet cat, will join Barbie.

LOCAL LABEL HOSTS RYERSON STUDENTS IN HAITI
In June, Consuelo McAlister and Anne Pringle, co-founders of Local Buttons, a Toronto-based apparel firm, hosted a group trip to Haiti for some lucky Ryerson University fashion students. Local Buttons creates up-cycled professional wear and accessories that provides sustainable, fair-pay jobs in Haiti and breathes new life into old materials. The purpose of the experiential learning opportunity was meant to give students first-hand insight about ethical production and sustainability in the fashion industry. ACTIVEWEAR BY BETSEY JOHNSON
Known for doing runway cartwheels at the finale of her shows, it seems fitting that 72-year old American designer Betsey Johnson will be designing a line of activewear that will include leggings, fleece-lined jackets and shapewear. The collection will be sold in store and online at Nordstrom.com, Macys.com and BetseyJohnson.com starting this fall and will retail between US$49 and US$120.

INDUSTRY MOURNS FASHION VET
On May 31, 2014, Canada's fashion industry lost one of its matriarchs. Manchester-born, Toronto-based designer Pat McDonagh lost her battle with lung cancer. McDonagh was best known for the red carpet looks she designed for Toronto's glitter girls and society ladies but before moving to Canada in 1966, she owned and operated two boutiques in London and made costumes for The Avengers, a hit TV series in the 1960s. Along with friend and fellow designer Marilyn Brooks, the two were among the first to promote and establish Toronto's fashion design community.
