1. TFI NEW LABELS® WINNER CROWNED MAY 5
Anticipation filled the room for TFI New Labels® 2014 on May 5th at One King West where the runway was host to four of Canada’s top fashion up and comers. Over 250 media, buyers, celebrities and industry elite witnessed as AliceAzur by Miriam Baker was named Most Promising New Label, presented by Suzanne Rogers.

Baker showcased her collection AliceAzur alongside fellow finalists Christopher Paunil Designs, Laura Siegel, and NOMAD of the SUN by Ashley Boutcher. With feminine silhouettes inspired by the designer's time in the English countryside, AliceAzur won over the distinguished panel of judges, which included TNT boutique owner Arie Assaraf, fashion designer David Dixon, Flare fashion director Tiyana Grulovic, and philanthropist Suzanne Rogers.

“I am overwhelmed with this acknowledgement and would not have pushed myself this far if it wasn’t for the support of TFI and the panel of judges,” said Baker. “I have learned so much through this process and am excited to develop a complete size range and start production.”

Baker (near right with Suzanne Rogers) was awarded a $25,000 cash prize for Most Promising New Label presented by Suzanne Rogers to use towards developing her next collection, an editorial spread in Flare magazine and production of a lookbook for her winning collection, provided by beauty partners CoverGirl and Pantene.

Baker's collection, her first since graduating from Ryerson University in 2013, featured ladylike dresses in eyelet, cotton shirting or tweed appointed with removable contrasting collars and cuffs. A softly tailored pink melton coat and a cape cut in wool boucle gave an air of nonchalant elegance. Although the pieces are designed, cut and tailored to suit women with larger busts, they can be worn by women of all sizes – the mark of a winning and marketable line.

“There was a cohesiveness to the collection,” said Grulovic. “And, it was polished and impeccably tailored.”

Ashley Boutcher's NOMAD of the SUN swimwear line featured figure-flattering one- and two-piece looks in navy, red and grey, with beading, sexy wrap-around ties and an original digital print she created from a photograph taken while on vacation in Hawaii. Travel-friendly cover-ups included solid and printed mesh pants, shorts, skirts and caftans.

Known for working with artisans around the globe, Laura Siegel's fall/winter collection marked a new, bold, styling direction for the designer. Signature pieces such as organically dyed, asymmetrically wrapped cardigans, and loose-fitting pants and dresses were paired with tight leather leggings and multi-layered silver chain to achieve a sexier and edgier vibe. Hand-knit chunky sweaters and cardigans in ivory and forest, perfect for Canadian winters, were standouts among the 12-look collection.

Closing the show was Christopher Paunil, participating in New Labels® for a second consecutive year. His collection, inspired by Haida art and symbology, included stunning cocktail and evening looks featuring strategically placed appliques on mesh bodices. Show-stopping floor-sweeping gowns, cut in black neoprene, were accessorized with black fox wraps designed by TFI resident alum Farley Chatto. The overall look was sleek and glamorous.

“All of our finalists have promising futures and each year we are amazed by the caliber of the showcased collections”, said Susan Langdon, executive director, Toronto Fashion Incubator (TFI). “Without the support of people like Suzanne Rogers and our key event sponsors – the City of Toronto, Flare magazine, Mantella Corporation, One King West, CoverGirl and Pantene – this special event in support of these Canadian design talents would not be possible.”

TFI New Labels® is an annual fundraiser in support of the non-profit Toronto Fashion Incubator. Canadian fashion icon Jeanne Beker (left) emceed the evening, which included a cocktail reception and fashion show, with runway beauty looks created by CoverGirl and Pantene. Guests were also treated to a performance by Juno-nominated singer songwriter Vita Chambers. Notable supporters of Canadian fashion and industry VIPs were in attendance, including City Councillor Shelley Carroll, Adam Giambrone (TFI acting chair), Brian Gluckstein (interior designer), Erin McLaughlin (Style at Home), Lisa Tant (Holt Renfrew), Cameron Williamson (Flare) and Nicholas Mellamphy, Evelyn Reynolds, Suzanne Timmins and Mary Turner (Hudson’s Bay Co.). Socialites Jenna Bitove, Simona Shnaider and Sylvia Mantella wowed guests in their gala looks, many of which were Canadian-designed.

“It is so important to support TFI. Fashion isn't just about what you’re wearing, it represents many elements from arts and culture to local economic growth,” said Mantella, (left) director of brand development, Mantella Corporation. “Ten years ago London Fashion was barely acknowledged from a commercial perspective, but today it's a must see on the fashion week circuit alongside New York, Paris and Milan. I absolutely see Toronto going in this direction and TFI is one of Canada's key and relevant platforms to get it there.”
