1. TFI ULTIMATE PLATINUM GALA

One thousand fashionable guests crowded into The Carlu on April 17, 2007, to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Toronto Fashion Incubator (TFI). The gala fundraising event, ULTIMATE PLATINUM TFIXX07, featured two fashion shows: TFI New Labels, where quelque filles, a new designer line by Seneca College grads Sarah Nicol and Kelly Dowdall (above), was named the winner of the 2007 ELLE Canada New Labels Fashion Award.

Nicol and Dowdall received a prize package valued at $25,000, including cash and a one-page editorial in ELLE Canada. The show also featured debut collections from 1.618 (below left) by Engelbert Gayagoy, a graduate from Creapole - Ecole Superieure de Design Industriel in Paris, Malak (below centre) by Ryerson grad Kalam Lee , and OZEN (below right) by Phoebe Gao and Enfys Zhou, both graduates from George Brown College.

“All of the lines were fabulous,” said Susan Langdon, TFI executive director. “But tonight’s segment of the TFI New Labels competition was based on runway appeal. Quelque filles’ presentation was really outstanding and it took them over the top.”

TFI New Labels is a national design competition for new fashion designers. The judging process took place over a five-month period. This year’s panel of judges included Arie Assaraf, buyer/owner TNT boutiques; Nathalie Atkinson, fashion journalist, National Post; Canadian designer and TFI Board member David Dixon; and Rita Silvan, editor-in-chief, ELLE Canada, who was head judge.

The Ultimate Platinum Celebrity Runway Show followed New Labels and featured 20 Canadian celebrities modelling one-of-a-kind, red carpet gowns created by TFI members and alumni. Master of ceremonies Dina Pugliese from Breakfast Television and Star! Daily looked gorgeous in her Arthur Mendonca platinum gown, as did runway model Tanya Kim, co-host of eTalk, who wore a sassy Damzels in This Dress number with a flirty red crinoline, Sitara Hewitt, star of Little Mosque on the Prairie, in her sexy, sheer Karamea gown, and singer Fefe Dobson in a pleated organza Katya Revenko piece. Also wowing the crowd were actresses Kristin Booth, Maggie Castle, Miriam McDonald, Tamara Podemski, Monika Schnarre and Tara Spencer-Nairn; singers Sara Slean, Emilie-Claire Barlow and Amanda Wilkinson; and TV celebrities Erica Ehm, Mary Jo Eustace, Mary Kitchen, Tracey Melchor, Sarika Sehgal, Jacintha Wesselingh and Liz West.

Dressing them were TFI members and alumni Joeffer Caoc, Farley Chatto, CinCyn, Rosa Costanzo, David Dixon, Zoran Dobric, Fashion Psychology, Sunny Fong, Franke, Juma, Kity, Thien Le, Jason Matlo, Mercy, Katya Revenko, Crystal Siemens and Ula Zukowska.

“We’re thrilled with the success of our first big gala fundraiser,” says Langdon. “Not only did we raise almost $50,000 to support community programming offered by our non-profit, everyone seems to have had a great time. We also received extensive event coverage from media outlets such as The Toronto Star, National Post, eTalk, MTV, Star! Daily, Breakfast Television and Inside Fashion.

We could not have succeeded without help from our corporate and event sponsors, as well as from our silent auction donors and everyone who bought a ticket to support our non-profit.”

2. Looking Fabulous

On Wednesday, April 11, 2007, the LookFAB Studio opened its doors for a special sneak peek and TFI was there to get the inside scoop. Located at 33 Bloor St. E. in Toronto, the LookFAB Studio is a new concept in beauty marketing. Clients can get free hair styling, makeup applications and beauty product consultations. The preview party was filled with excited fashionistas and celebrities such as Canadian Idol judge Zack Werner, host Ben Mulroney and some of the cast from Degrassi: The Next Generation (above: Miriam McDonald gets her hair styled). Brands featured at the studio include Cover Girl, Olay, Pantene Pro-V, Clairol, Crest and Venus.

The LookFAB studio will stay open until May 13, 2007. Other exciting events at LookFAB are the Fashion magazine give-away days on May 4 and 5, when clients can enter to win a prize pack filled with the latest beauty products, valued at $125. Every Wednesday from noon to 1pm and Thursday from 5 to 6pm, editors from Rouge magazine will be on hand to discuss their favourite fashion and beauty tips, tricks and secrets. 3. Mode Future: The First International Fashion Incubator Conference

As a member of the TFI advisory board, I had the fortunate task of representing the Incubator at Mode Future, the first international fashion incubator conference that took place in Kent, England, on March 15, 2007.

The aim of the conference was to bring together representatives of existing fashion incubators around the world and encourage debate on how to combine the creative concept behind fashion incubation with specialized business training to effectively support designers who operate under the auspices of fashion incubators.

It was poignant that the first international fashion incubator conference coincided with TFI’s 20th Anniversary. The TFI, the first official fashion incubator in the world, has gained international recognition and been adopted as a role model by several incubators in Europe, the U.S., Australia and New Zealand.

The conference opened with a get-acquainted dinner. I had the opportunity to exchange ideas on teaching fashion promotion with Tony Glenville, a freelance journalist for countless publications, including Express and Sunday Express, View on Colour, French Vogue, Australian Vogue and Australian Harper’s Bazaar, and the current leader for a BA (Hons.) in fashion promotion at the University for the Creative Arts at Rochester
(UCCAR). I particularly enjoyed his account of the well-integrated program the UCCAR has established, encouraging fashion students to actively participate in the running of fashion week in the U.K.

Equally stimulating was a chat with Vincent Blanquart, the director of Maisons de Mode, what was formerly a dead retail zone and is now part of an ambitious regeneration project for the Lille Metropolitan area. Located about an hour outside Paris, Maisons de Mode supports designers and their collections from the incubation stage through to early commercialization in specially designed boutiques.

The following day, during the conference, a number of industry leaders and designers paneled an exciting forum. A few shared compelling experiences of professional setbacks that later led to rewarding advancements in their professional careers. The first one to speak was Tony Glenville, next was Olaf Parker, the creative director of Burro, considered one of the most influential British brands of the last 15 years. Olaf reminded us that often our strengths are our biggest weaknesses.

The last speakers on the panel were the design duo behind Harriet’s Muse (right), the sought-after boutique in Kingly Court, London. Craig Spellar and Cheryl Partington spoke candidly about their failures and successes on the road to earning the fine reputation they enjoy today. What was most significant was hearing Cheryl speak openly on the importance of the kind of self-advancement that can only emerge from the cultivation of self-esteem. It is her belief that successful business revolves around this idea.

The conference closed on a promise that efforts were already at work to establish an international network of fashion incubators with those already in existence in Europe, the U.S., Canada, Australia and New Zealand.

The realization that what is built with passion, commitment, collaboration and support holds great promise for the future is precisely the motivation behind Mode Future and what the international network of fashion incubators hopes to nurture, practice and preach for the benefit of aspiring designers around the world.

Cheeky New Magazine
Developed by The Artist Group, Cheeky is a new online monthly magazine created for artists to showcase what they want, when they want. Check out the first issue at www.cheekmagazine.com.

Ryerson Students Flourish at Green Living
The Green Living Show, the first consumer show dedicated to sustainable living, took place at the Direct Energy Center in Toronto between April 27 and 29. More than 200 exhibitors presented their products, while world-class speakers, including Al Gore and David Suzuki, spoke to the environmentally conscious audience. Both big corporations and small businesses are tuning in to this movement to be more aware and responsible toward environmental issues. Over the three-day event, Ryerson students showcased a wide range of innovative garments in their Flourish Fashion shows. The independently run student project proved that eco-fashion can be chic and stylish. The organizers produced a paperless program, available at www.flourishfashion.ca, which lists the organizer and designer bios, and more information on how to be “green.”

Canadian Apparel Credit Checking Service

Beginner Wet Felting: Skinny Scarves

Basic Hand-Mending: Buttons & Repairs

If you've forgotten or never learned how to sew on a button, stitch up a drooping hem or mend a torn garment, then this beginner hand-sewing class is for you. Natural Dyeing on Silk Scarves

Learn how to dye yarn or fabric using common household dyestuffs such as onion skins, pomegranates and tea. Participants will also use one not-so-common, but brilliant, ancient dyestuff, cochineal (crushed beetles). Participants will dye their own 100% silk scarf, and will also leave with a small set of colour samples created in the class as well as instruction/resource sheets. Additional scarves may be purchased for $6 each. Note: participants should wear casual clothes, as dyeing can be quite messy.
