1. Fashion’s Night Out
Fashion’s Night Out is coming to Toronto on September 6. The shopping extravaganza includes fashion parties, designer appearances and exhibitions at venues around the city, all between the hours of 6 pm to 11 pm. Current Toronto participants include TNT, Holt Renfrew, Juicy Couture, Comrags, MasterCard, Rac Boutique, Cole Haan and eLuxe. The global celebration of fashion was created in New York City in 2009 and was designed to boost the industry’s economy during the recession.

For its debut Fashion’s Night Out event, TFI is partnering with TNT and MasterCard for an exciting shopping evening to support Fashion Cares. Shop men's and women's accessories and apparel at The Shopping Soirée at the Oval Square in Shops at Hazelton Lanes. Enjoy refreshments, expert styling and beauty advice from FLARE magazine editors, touch ups from Maybelline and Redken, free event parking and more! (See www.FNO-Toronto.com for details.) This event is free to attend and open to the public.

10% of purchases from TFI vendors and TNT will benefit the Elton John Aids Foundation and the AIDS Committee of Toronto. Spend more than $200 and get a special Fashion Cares 25th-anniversary retrospective book. Spend more than $500 and you’ll be eligible to win two VIP gala tickets to Fashion Cares on Sept 9 featuring Elton John (a value of $3,000), plus two VVIP passes to the after-party and two all-access event passes. A limited number of official FNO tote bags will be available for purchase at $50.

Designers and retailers wanting to get involved in the TFI’s group shopping event can contact info@fashionincubator.com. You can also register your shop for Fashion’s Night Out Toronto at www.fashionsnightout.com.

Check out www.FNO-Toronto.com or @FNO_Toronto for more information and updates on Fashion’s Night Out events and retailers. FNO Toronto is generously supported by:

2. IMG Takes Over Toronto Fashion Week
IMG Canada is the new owner and producer of Toronto fashion week, currently called World MasterCard Fashion Week. The Fashion Design Council of Canada (FDCC), which previously ran the event, announced the change in August. IMG’s roster of fashion weeks includes New York, London, Milan, Berlin, Australia, Tokyo, Mumbai, Istanbul, Miami, Russia and more.

The FDCC has consulted with IMG for the past few years regarding the production, designer outreach, marketing and sponsorship of fashion week.

“We look forward to the exciting changes ahead,” said Sam Galet, the vp managing director of IMG Canada in a press release. “Our main goal will remain to focus on Canadian design talent, offering them a world-renowned platform to debut their latest collections and present themselves to an international audience of media and industry professionals.”

It plans to work with a panel of regional consultants and industry professionals to ensure the event remains regionally significant, it says.

The spring 2013 World MasterCard Fashion Week will be held at David Pecaut Square from October 22 to 26, 2012.

3. Fashion Cares Ends After 25 Years
Next month’s Fashion Cares will be its last. On September 9, after 25 years the fundraiser to increase awareness of HIV and AIDs, and to benefit AIDS charities across Canada, is going out the same way it started—in style.

Along with its legendary fashion show spectacular, including a retrospective of past Fashion Cares’ pieces, the Sony Centre will rock with performances by Elton John, four-time Juno Award-winner Billy Newton-Davis, international artists Scissor Sisters and Janelle Monáe, as well as Canadians Shawn Desman, Jully Black, Keshia Chanté, Molly Johnson and more.

The gala, whose hallmark is outrageous outfits, sit-down dinners, entertainment, celebrities and a roaring after-party, began in 1987 but has been on hold since 2008.

4. Need Capital?
CBC is looking for businesses to participate in the second season of The Big Decision, the television show where investors Arlene Dickinson and Jim Treliving spend their time and money trying to help struggling Canadian companies.

Criteria to apply:
• must be in operation for at least three years and have more than five employees
• must be a privately held business, family business, partnership or limited partnership registered in Canada
• must have a gross revenue of at least $500,000 per year
• must speak English fluently

For more information on how to apply, visit www.cbc.ca/thebigdecision/apply.html.

For women entrepreneurs, Ontario’s Women’s Directorate (OWD) has recently launched a Microlending for Women in Ontario Grant Program to provide small loans to organizations that are pursuing microfinancing strategies.

The current funding deadline has passed, but check the Ontario Grants website at www.grants.gov.on.ca/GrantsPortal for the next application submission date.

5. Nordstrom Expands
Luxury retailer Nordstrom is opening Topshop stores in 14 locations across the U.S. this month. Unlike the Topshop franchise agreement with Canadian department store The Bay, each Nordstrom store will feature a 2,500-sq.-ft. Topshop for women and a 1,500-sq.-ft. Topman with fixtures, lighting and mannequins in keeping with the U.K.-brand’s youthful and trendy image.

For Nordstrom, the deal is a way to boost women’s sales, which have been soft for several seasons. For Topshop, it’s a way of expanding safely into a new market, although it will continue to open its freestanding stores in the U.S., of which it already has one in SoHo and two in Las Vegas and Chicago. It plans to open 15 to 20 more over the next five years.

According to news reports in The Globe and Mail, Nordstrom is also expanding across the border into Canada, opening four locations in upcoming months, including the Pacific Centre in Vancouver, Chinook Centre in Calgary, Rideau Centre in Ottawa and Sherway Gardens in Toronto.

6. J.C. Penney Gets Fresh
U.S. department stores seem to be having a love affair with Canadians. As part of its repositioning, J.C. Penney is adding affordable Loblaw’s brand Joe Fresh to its mix. The four-year agreement includes opening 1,000 to 2,500-sq.-ft. Joe Fresh shops in 683 of its locations, complete with Joe Fresh fixtures and signage.

Along with the six current locations, Joe Fresh founder and owner Joe Mimran says he’ll continue to roll out additional freestanding stores in the U.S.

Montreal Fashion Week's Spring 2013 Schedule
The spring 2013 edition of Montreal Fashion Week begins September 4 at a new venue, the Arsenal contemporary art complex at 2020 William St. Scheduled designers include Denis Gagnon, Martin Lim, Mélissa Nepton, Rachel Sin and more. For tickets and more information, visit www.montrealfashionweek.ca.

Big Fashion At The ROM
The Royal Ontario Museum’s (ROM) newest exhibition BIG showcases items that are big in size, price tag, historical significance, news, or made by a big name artist, such as a historical hand-painted and dyed chintz hanging, circa 1750, and contemporary John Galliano for Christian Dior Couture that took more than 500 hours to create. Many of the installation’s 40 objects have never been displayed to the public before. Big opens November 3, 2012, in the Patricia Harris Gallery of Costume and Textiles in Toronto.

Marc Jacobs AIDS Shirts
For the second year, Marc Jacobs has created a T-shirt designed to help improve the quality of life of people living with HIV/AIDS in developing countries or who are U.S. immigrants. The shirts retail for about $35 and are available at Marc Jacobs stores or online at www.marcjacobs.com. All proceeds from the sales go to the non-profit organization Aid for AIDS International.

Galliano Loses Award
John Galliano
can’t win. His drunken racist and anti-Semitic outbursts last year at a Paris café continue to haunt him. After being fired from Christian Dior and his signature label last year, he has now been stripped of his Legion of Honor merit award, of which he was decorated a Chevalier in 2010. The Legion of Honor is one of the highest decorations in France. In the meantime, according to WWD, Galliano has also lodged a claim with the Conseil des Prud’hommes against his former employer. A hearing is scheduled for February 4.

Condé Nast Restructures Staff
According to Condé Nast Media Group, tightening belts is trendy this season. Condé Nast, which publishes WWD, Vogue and W, among others, is cutting a dozen staff in an effort to integrate its digital and print sales. Among those leaving are Thomas Hartman, its senior vice president, corporate sales, and Robert Silverstone, its senior vice president, finance. Judy Safir is taking on Silverstone’s position. Pat Connolly is vice president, marketing solutions, Daniella Wells is vice president, insights and brand strategy, while Josh Stinchcomb is the new vice president, corporate partnerships, overseeing print, digital, mobile, video and marketing sales. He was previously in charge of just digital.
