HAPPY HOLIDAYS from the Toronto Fashion Incubator!

1. New Labels Semi-finalists
Five Canadian labels have made the cut in the first round of the Toronto Fashion Incubator’s 2012 New Labels® Fashion Design Competition. Calls for entry went out to 5,000, applications were distributed to over 100 serious contenders and three-dozen applications from across Canada were submitted.

The five semi-finalists are Sid Neigum from Edmonton; Patrick Larrivee from Montreal; and Blak by Diego Fuchs and Helder Aguiar , Jameson Kane by Genevieve Pearson and Stanley Capobianco, and Lois Laine by Lois Van Koughnet from Toronto.

The labels are one step closer to winning The Suzanne Rogers Award for Best New Label, a $25,000 cash prize, a 24/7 TFI design studio sponsored by TNT boutique and a full-page feature in FLARE magazine. In addition, the winner’s New Labels collection will be sold in TNT boutiques in 2012. The designers will meet the judges for the next face-off in January and will compete on the runway for the final challenge on May 3, 2012, at the Royal Ontario Museum. Stay tuned for future competition updates.

Accessity Closes Shop
After 31 years in retail, accessory boutique Accessity is closing its doors. A fixture in Toronto's tony Bloor-Yorkville area, the store began in 1980 as a hosiery boutique called Leggings. Nine years and three locations later, the store broadened its offerings to include costume jewellery, hats, scarves and casualwear, thus spurring the name change. While no reason for closing has been announced, an online message from owner Oriella Reia Stillo on the occasion of the store's 30th anniversary celebration last year says, "I can't promise another 30 years, but I'm not going anywhere soon."

Lexus Unveils The Lexus Fashion Workshop
Lexus challenged four inventive designers to rethink their notions of automotive design for an advertising campaign to appear in Vogue. Using some of the more than 2,000 individual parts of a completely dismantled Lexus CT hybrid, a vehicle that is 90% recyclable, the designers created fashionable works of art as part of The Lexus Fashion Workshop. From crank bearings to exhaust gaskets, the designers took on the challenge with verve, turning some of the best engineered auto parts into innovative fashion accessories – all while driving home the beauty of recycling. Participating designers were Moss Lipow, Eddie Borgo, John Patrick and Alejandro Ingelmo. To see the designs, click here.

DXA Award Winners
On November 23, the Design Exchange Awards announced Canada’s top 50 design projects in the categories of architecture, interior design, industrial design, landscape architecture, urban design, visual communications, fashion design, as well as CEO of the Year. Principal designers Andrea Lenczner and Christie Smythe of Smythe took home Gold in the fashion category. Recognized for high-quality contemporary jackets and coats designed and manufactured in Canada, Smythe enjoys distribution across Canada as well as the United States and Japan. To Catch A Thief
Thieves in Paris have a thing for designer Marc Jacobs. First, his entire spring 2012 sample collection was stolen from a Paris-bound train in November. A week later, 10 pallets of Jacobs’-designed Louis Vuitton handbags, totes and suitcases, valued at over $400,000, were taken in a daring heist from the Vuitton store at Roissy-Charles de Gaulle airport where a security guard was overpowered and five employees were held hostage. On Twitter, Jacobs posted a reward for information regarding the stolen spring samples with a plea to call 212.343.0222.

More Versace To Hit H&M
On November 19, Versace devotees lined up for hours at the H&M store on Toronto’s Bloor Street, hoping to snag some loot from the Versace for H&M collection, a first-time collaboration between the iconic Italian design house and the discount retailer from Stockholm. For those who missed out, more Versace for H&M products will launch on January 19 in countries with an H&M e-commerce site and it’s rumoured that a second collaborative collection is in the works to hit stores in early 2012.

Banned In Britain
A Miu Miu ad featuring Hailee Steinfeld has been banned in Britain on the grounds that it promotes reckless behaviour. The ad shows the 14-year-old True Grit actress sitting on a railway track in a 1940’s styled setting. The British Advertising Standards Authority concluded the ad “...was irresponsible and in breach of the Code showing a child in a hazardous or dangerous situation.”

TFI Welcomes Jameson Kane
On December 1, 2011, TFI welcomed its newest Residents, Genevieve Pearson and Stanley Capobianco of womenswear label Jameson Kane. The new business venture designs and wholesales contemporary coats and outerwear suitable for stores such as TNT, The Bay and Holt Renfrew. Jameson Kane is one of five semi-finalists chosen to compete in TFI's 2012 New Labels competition.
