1. LG Fashion Week Review

The spring/summer 2010 installment of LG Fashion Week Beauty by L’Oreal wrapped up the fashion schedule in Toronto in late October. This time the venue was a combination of tents and a condo showroom at the corner of King Street West and Shaw. The move from Nathan Phillips Square provided more space, but roomier didn’t mean better or more fashionable. (Although on-site loos were a welcome relief.) Organized by the Fashion Design Council of Canada (FDCC), this week's theme was Show Love. Way to show it.

Pre-LG Fashion Week

Greta Constantine Revs It Up
One of Canada’s most prolific design labels, Greta Constantine brought together what seemed to be all of Canada’s fashion A-listers and them some to their spring/summer 2010 collection show at the Audi showroom on Bayview. The design dream team of Kirk Pickersgill and Stephen Wong held an elaborate pre-cocktail soiree on the main floor of the car dealership where guests lounged on the cosiest of beds by Hastens and listened to the music styling of former supermodel Eve Salvail before making the trek down the red carpeted ramp to the starkly lit parking garage for the show. Taking a departure from their once aptly-named “Jersey Boys” title, Pickersgill and Wong sent a flurry of models in flowing evening gowns, some with opulent feather details, structured leather separates, and brightly coloured prints. GC’s sexy, new menswear line Ezra Constantine, featured S&M-inspired leather and sequined accents and accessories. –GM

Phillip Sparks Casts Off
The unofficial pre-tent week started on Wednesday, October 14, with menswear designer Philip Sparks casting a reel at his home base, The Burroughes Building at Queen and Bathurst. Setting the scene were over-sized vintage advertising signage from the building’s namesake, FC Burroughes Furniture Company. Sparks’s retro cottage life-inspired show had the (almost) pre-pubescent looking cast of male models walking the runway equipped with fishing reels and nets. His summer collection seemed to have been pulled directly from his grandfather’s closet with high-wasted, loose-fitting knee-length cotton shorts, patterned shirts and sweater sets. If anything, Sparks successfully reflected his own boyish charm throughout his collection and made us wish for the simpler days of summers past. –GM

The Room
Following Sparks fete, the tops of the fashion industry ladder convened at The Bay’s flagship store to gather their own impression of the newly refurbished The Room – The Bay’s luxury department. Entering through the back doors on Richmond Street, well-decked out guests were greeted by a slew of handsome faces in white tuxedos, corralled into freight elevators and then eased into a long, candlelit corridor opening up into the now modernized and sleekly designed department helmed by seasoned fashion retail expert and The Bay president and CEO Bonnie Brooks. Invitees to the The Room launch (formerly known as the St. Regis Room) included the mainstay clientele of sophisticates and socialites along with the likes of Canadian supermodels Daria Werbowy and Jessica Stam who looked statuesque and almost surreal amongst the usual fashionable elite. In an aim to charm a hipper clientele, The Room now carries both Canadian and internationally luxury brands including Pink Tartan, Ungaro, Balmain, and Erdem. –GM

LG Fashion Week

Aime Spreads a Warm Breeze
With an image backdrop of a Mediterranean city view from the sea, Aime (now minus the Luxury) designer Monica Mei eased us into her first seasonal collection of feminine, easy-to-wear jersey separates with splashes of retro patterns reminiscent of aprons. Just the right amount of styling with hair pieces from Lara Vincent and jewellery from Psalms 9:11 Accessories left us focusing on the pieces without overpowering the collection itself. –GM

Attitude by Sears and Joe Fresh at Loblaw’s
Is there something wrong with this scenario? The two lowest-priced lines to show at fashion week (nothing over $100) drew the most attention.

Take Joe Fresh, the brand created for Loblaws grocery stores. It’s a fixture on the Toronto catwalk what with design head Joe Mimran also chairing the FDCC. People were jimmied onto the bleachers and Canadian celebs such as Ben Mulroney of etalk, and former NHLer Tie Domi cozying up with honey Kelly Carlson of Nip/Tuck, jammed the front row. True, Theodora Richards, daughter of The Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards, did rock the runway. She tripped into the show—slipping out of her heels—and continued in just her white “sweater” body suit and sheer knee highs, but still kept the energy flowing. Pretty pink rose tees, yellow rose skirts and unstructured jackets, crochet coats, gingham rompers and shirtings for women, paired with naïf clogs and loafers and glasses created a flirty, nerdy schoolgirl look. Even the guys went pink with checked pegged pants. Paired with preppy pullovers and cardigans, it was collegiate spirit all the way. Plenty of panties, bloomers, and bras worn over tops underscored—or overscored?—the innerwear as outerwear theme.

Attitude by Sears didn’t have quite the same attendance, but the buzz in the media room after the show was all about the line. Sears, not known for its high fashion, wanted to celebrate the relaunch of this collection, which is all about being style conscious without being a trend lemming. Designed by Cynthia Florek, formerly of the TFI New Labels award-winning duo Cincyn, the message was all there in black and white: the boyfriend jackets, the pegged pants, the flirty dresses and skirts with ruffled and gathered details. The finale of glittering colour-blocked pants and tees was like an exclamation point on the show. But, blimey, what’s with the bloomers again? –DM

David Dixon and Barbie
Fashion week has lost a lot of the glam it’s long been known for, but the past two seasons of pairing David Dixon’s signature collection with his Barbie for The Bay line has brought it back. Last season, the bevy of Kens serving bubbly pink champagne to the audience in our seats, and this season wine and— yes—beer (Peroni, imported, of course) served by volunteers during the intermission, made the wait between shows far more civilized and pleasant than the usual routine of herding us in and out of the runway room.

The civilizing influence goes with Dixon’s clothes, which always reflect a ladylike refinement. This season’s theme was the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, referenced in the tulip-shaped skirts, the beautiful rose-shaped tulle appliqués, and bright bouquet colour accents. Dixon also continued his signature use of texture, not only with roses, but a jacket seemingly made of layers of petals, spirograph circles on organza evening gowns and silver rectangles of aluminum fashioned into layers of wide fringe on a slim, strapless dress, as well as a skirt and top paired with floating cobalt organza that upped the glam quotient.

Next came Barbie by David Dixon. The opening video clip from the movie Funny Face featured Eve Arden screaming “Think Pink!” Very apropos as the collection, of course, leaned heavily on Barbie’s signature fuchsia. But the clip also alluded to Dixon’s other inspiration, Audrey Hepburn as the beautiful intellectual in the movie who is transformed by fashion. As portrayed by Dixon, Barbie is no blonde bimbo. She’s smart — you can tell by the black-framed glasses and jaunty pink polka dot scarf she wears with her black-and-white trapeze coat and modestly above-the-knee skirt. She favours vibrant trenchcoats and oversized-houndstooth sheaths in black and white. She has a decidedly ’60s flair and Ken is a cute nerd in bowties, tapered Bermuda shorts and shrunken jackets. As one fashionista quipped of the show, it was Mad Men meets bubblegum. It wasn’t a bad thing. –DM

Dress to Kill Magazine Toronto Launch
Montreal-based magazine Dress to Kill held its Toronto launch party on opening night of LG Fashion Week at Maro night club to introduce the Toronto version of the publication. The magazine’s Toronto version will feature the same fashion spreads in each issue with editorial content varying from each city. Dress to Kill launched last year in Montreal and is available on newsstands, with a small portion available at no cost at various upscale boutiques in Toronto’s downtown. Evan Biddell’s Non-Disaster
Evan Biddell came into his own this fashion week by presenting a collection which seems to truly reflect his esthetic. Preceding his presentation of his collection named A Natural Disaster was a short cartoon clip featuring the designer himself going into fashion battle. Under the suggestion of fashion stylist Peter Papapetrou, the show non-traditionally transitioned from eveningwear to casualwear. From long liquid gowns to tight wrestler-inspired bodysuits, Biddell’s collection was his most cohesive and daring to date. Introducing a men’s line to his portfolio (thank you to another designer for adding some male eye candy to the runway), Biddell secured his crown as the “hoodie king”, ranking as one of the top performers this season, and certainly most improved. –GM

LOVAS by Wesley Badanjak
We were pleasantly surprised with LOVAS by Wesley Badanjak, making his LG Fashion Week debut with his second collection of his career. Entitled Mare Adriaticum, Latin for the Adriatic Sea, Badanjak showed contemporary tailored separates and dresses in shades of blue with dashes of watermelon and white. Of all the new designers showing during the week, Badanjak's attention to quality of fit and construction stood out amongst the rest. The Toronto-based, Ryerson University grad moonlights as assistant to Canadian designer David Dixon. –SL

Lucian Matis
Still glowing from his win of the inaugural FDCC Designer Development Fund (FDDF) award, Lucian Matis’ circus-inspired show was what most people were celebrating on the last night of LG Fashion Week. Models were sent out looking like Victorian asylum patients with restrictive stud-embellished straps wrapped around each models head and makeup (or lack of) making us want to jump out of our seats and give the poor sickly looking models a vitamin B12 shot. While not taking the circus theme literally (thank goodness) — barring a few sad clown printed dresses — the majority of his collection featured layered and draped evening dresses of sequins, satin and sheer chiffon. Elegant and feminine, Matis showed his vision off in one of the most cohesive collections of the week. –GM

This is the second season that Nada Shepherd nailed her show. Called Infatuation, it was about lust, love and passion. The clue came in the opening video of one of the model’s summoning a handsome stud up the stairs. Shepherd’s take on the perfect rendezvous wardrobe revolves around silk, satin, leather — both perforated and metal embossed—and lots and lots of lace. Lace was used as inserts, or all over in a nearly transparent jacket with hand-painted bursts of turquoise flowers or a mauve asymmetric slip dress with lace overlay. The look was sexy and feminine, heading toward gothic. The jewellery —bursts of oversized pearls and chains designed by Shay Lowe — nearly stole the show. The two finale gowns of pouffed lace and tulle elicited a surprised “Ah” from the crowd. The only question: what to make of the exaggerated ’dos — a French twist with a nod to Marge Simpson? –DM

Pink Tartan
Kimberley Newport-Mimran took Pink Tartan to the water for its main theme. The opening grouping was all nautical: wide-legged sailor pants and striped tops with matching shoulder pads perched like epaulettes on top, striped wrap mini dresses and stripes glammed up with shimmer and shine in off-the-shoulder sweaters and mini skirts. Sailing along on the ’80s theme, slinky silvery vests over tight biker-inspired shorts and tube tops, boyfriend jackets over glittery gold dresses, anoraks over belted button-down shirts, and trenches available at all lengths. Did we say, took to the water? We meant with its market appeal, Mimran will be taking it to the bank.

2. TFI New Labels Is Tickled Pink
The Toronto Fashion Incubator (TFI) is getting dolled up with new event partner Barbie®. As model and muse, Barbie has inspired some of the top names in fashion and will now sponsor the highly anticipated TFI New Labels® Fashion Design Competition. Applications to enter the competition are available online at www.fashionincubator.com. Canadian womenswear apparel designers with less than three years experience have until November 24, 2009, to enter New Labels®, now in its 17th year. The competition winner will be selected on Saturday, April 24, 2010, at the ELLE Canada benefit fundraiser for TFI. Guests will be surrounded by the splendour and glory of the 1930s at the posh Carlu event venue in Toronto to witness the conclusion of the six-month long design competition.

3. Toronto Fashion Incubator Press & Buyers Breakfast Spring 2010
On Friday, October 16, 2009, the Toronto Fashion Incubator (TFI) held its annual TFI Press & Buyers Breakfast in the newly expanded TFI, located in The Music Building, 285 Manitoba Dr., Exhibition Place.

This year, the NEW POD 1 played host to the breakfast, where guests, including Mayor David Miller of Toronto, had the exclusive opportunity to speak to a new crop of Canadian designers and take a first-hand look at their spring 2010 collections. Attendees also enjoyed a tour of the TFI facility and the new P&G Beauty Members Lounge.

TFI is an innovative, non-profit, small business and development centre dedicated to supporting and nurturing new and emerging apparel, accessory and other fashion and design entrepreneurs. The Breakfast, now in its 14th successful year, attracts talent from across Canada. This year, TFI welcomed members from British Columbia, New Brunswick and Quebec, who showed alongside local talent.

TFI now occupies over 8,300 square feet, entirely taking over The Music Building, a grand historic edifice on Toronto's Exhibition grounds. Designed by celebrity designer Glenn Dixon of W Network's Take This House and Sell It!, the newly expanded TFI features 10 new studios, a 1,900-square-foot production facility, flexible meeting space and an expanded resource centre with access to WGSN.com and Promostyl, global leaders in trend-forecasting services.

4. P&G Beauty Announced First Canadian Award Winners
P&G Beauty brought together more than 250 beauty and fashion journalists, photographers and fashion editors for the inaugural Canadian P&G Beauty Awards on October 29 at The Carlu. Hosted by Canadian screenwriter and actor Nia Vardalos of My Big Fat Greek Wedding fame, the night recognized the creative talents behind some of Canada’s top editorial work, including makeup artists, hair stylists, photographers and models. Some of the attendees included Valerie Bertinelli, FashionTelevision’s Jeanne Becker and Canada’s Next Top Model 2009 winner Meaghan Waller. "This awards ceremony was a beauty and fashion first in Canada with our home-grown talent being honoured by P&G Beauty for their stellar work in the industry," says Danielle Bibas, P&G beauty and grooming general manager, Canada. "We brought the P&G Beauty Awards to Canada because we recognize the superb talent that exists in this country and thought it was important to celebrate and support the thriving Canadian fashion and beauty industry."

Sixteen awards were handed out throughout the evening, by presenters who included Joeffer Caoc, Elmer Olsen, Shawn Hewson, and Yasmine Warsame.

Flare Turns 30
Over 1,000 guests attended Flare magazine’s lavish 30th birthday bash held at the Royal Ontario Museum on November 5. VIPs such as Flare editor-in-chief Lisa Tant, Corner Gas actor Tara Spencer-Nairn, Canadian Idol judge Jake Gold and former Flare publishers Orietta Minatel and David Hamilton sipped Skyy Vodka cocktails and nibbled chocolate offerings at the Cadbury Dessert Bar. Cruiser table tops were fashioned from a collage of past covers and editorial tears from 1979 to 2009 while the white, angled walls of the Michael Lee Chin Crystal served as a canvas for video and image projections. Upon departure, guests were treated with a chic felt tote bag by Joe Fresh filled with swag from P&G Beauty and other event sponsors.

Yigal Azrouël Canadian Appearance & Trunk Show
On Friday, November 13, 2009, New York-based designer Yigal Azrouël debuted his spring 2010 men's and women's ready-to-wear collections at the George C boutique located at 21 Hazelton Ave. Azrouël was born and raised in Israel, is of French-Moroccan descent, and has traveled extensively throughout his 11-year career. Fittingly, inspiration for his spring line reflects influences from various cultures and art. The mainly jersey collection of draped and slashed separates feature a grey, black and white palette with orange and lemon accents.

New Retailers
Serpentine boutique opened its doors on October 27 in Toronto's posh Yorkville district at 18 Hazelton Ave. The two-level store features men's and women's casual separates, denim and streetwear. Among its initial offerings is Canadian label JUMA, designed by brother-sister duo Jamil and Alia Juma, TFI resident alumni. In Ottawa, fashionistas can get their fashion fix at Kania Studio Boutique, located at 145 York St. The boutique features a luxury street-style line for women designed by TFI member Stacey Bafi-Yeboa. Fashion Incubation is Hot in Atlanta
Fashion incubators from around the world convened in Atlanta, Georgia, November 12 to 14 for the second International Conference of Fashion Incubators. Host city Atlanta welcomed delegates from Chicago, Dublin, Amsterdam (via satellite connection), Washington DC, Perth and of course Toronto, home to the world’s first fashion incubator. Hot topics included social media marketing, economic development benefits of incubation and international sourcing. A presentation of fall/winter 2010 by trend forecasting agency Promostyl wrapped up the session. The third ICFI will take place in Perth, Australia, in 2011 to coincide with Australia Fashion Week.

CBC.ca Features Canadian Designers
Canadian designers of women's apparel and accessories will be the featured attraction in CBC.ca's Holiday Gift Guide, which launched online in early November. Could the new project's fashion-focus have anything to do with Carolyn Rohaly, TFI volunteer and former blogger, who is now assistant to George Stroumboulopoulos, host of CBC's The Hour? We like to think so.

Kendra Francis On The Shopping Channel
Toronto designer Kendra Francis of Franke debuted her collection K by Kendra Francis on The Shopping Channel on November 1. The line, described as fashionable and contemporary, is comprised of 13 mix-and-match jersey separates, including dresses, tops, pants and jackets and ranges in price from $60 to $220. It’s available across Canada exclusively through The Shopping Channel.

Jessica Jensen Introduces Womenswear
On Friday, October 16, 2009, Canadian handbag designer Jessica Jensen launched her spring/summer 2010 collection at Thrush Holmes Empire Art Gallery on Toronto’s Queen West. Jensen also debuted her six-piece capsule collection of womenswear, priced at $498 retail. Collaborating with her photographer-husband, Joshua Jensen-Nagle, the evening showcased Jensen’s luxury handbags and dresses alongside Jensen-Nagle’s photography and campaign video, which looped on a large screen throughout the evening. Jensen, a graduate of Ryerson University’s fashion marketing program, launched her line in 2007 and has been featured in Vogue, InStyle, Lucky, Accessories, Fashion and Flare. Thomas Sabo Launches Watch Line
Toronto’s Ultra Supper Club was converted into a dark, gothic setting for the local launch of Thomas Sabo’s new line of watches. Imported tabletop styling directly from the company’s headquarters in Germany created the elegant backdrop for the high-end, men’s and women’s sterling silver jewellery and watches. Guests included actor Tara Spencer Nairn, socialite Ainsley Kerr, and etalk’s Tanya Kim. All left with a silver Thomas Sabo necklace. Thomas Sabo opened its first retail space in Canada in Montreal this fall and has plans to open locations in Toronto and Vancouver within the year. For more information, visit www.thomassabo.com.

Sculptz Launches In Canada
Sculptz Legwear and Shapewear marked its November 2009 launch into the Canadian market during LG Fashion Week on Wednesday, October 21. The runway installment was held in The Showroom, an intimate venue, and was hosted by Breakfast Television’s Dina Pugliese and Jennifer Valentyne. The colourful legwear and shapewear line, which includes tights, camisoles, briefs, and shorts, is available in select Sears and Addition-Elle stores. Bra Designer Winks To Dragons
Canadian lingerie designer Andrea Clair, president of Wink Intimates, pitched her 9to5 Bra on a recent episode of CBC's Dragons’ Den. Originally aired on Wednesday, October 28, Clair was presented the challenge of proving her design's worth to the mostly male panel who struggled to find the benefits of her patent-pending bra, which features a panel to cover up cleavage. Already boasting a celebrity following that includes Jann Arden and Monika Schnarre, Clair declined an investment offer of $150,000 in return for 55% of the company shares by the Den’s sole female Dragon, Arlene Dickinson. Shadow Box
On October 14, the BMO Financial Group Shadow Box Event returned for its 14th year with an artists’ reception and media preview. Held at the Textile Museum of Canada (TMC), the event featured an auction of over 150 Canadian and international artists. This year, the attention focused on fashion with items from some of Canada’s top fashion designers available for auction alongside the shadow box creations - produced especially for the TMC by talented artists, featured exhibitioners and well-known personalities Shadow Boxes are miniature pieces of art, measuring eight inches square. Highly irresistible and collectable, they make great groupings.
The exhibition and auction ran until October 29, with proceeds benefiting the museum to support exhibitions and education programs. For more information, click here.

LOULOU’s Birthday Block Party
LOULOU, Canada's shopping-focused fashion magazine, celebrated its five-year anniversary in Toronto on September 23 with a one-night-only shopping block party in Toronto. Readers were treated to retail discounts of up to 45% at Bloor Street West shops located between Yonge Street and Avenue Road, a live performance by Kate Voegele, refreshments, goodie bags, trend discussions with LOULOU editors and makeup applications courtesy of Revlon. Participating retailers included Banana Republic, The Gap, Guess, Puma, Town Shoes, Winners and Joe Fresh Style, who created a special pop-up store at Sassafraz Restaurant in Yorkville. Art Of Fashion Design Competition
Coinciding with Nuit Blanche, Art of Fashion (AOF) returned for its 11th annual Fashion Design Competition on October 3 at the Fermenting Cellar in Toronto’s Historic Distillery District. The title Most Promising Designer of 2009 was awarded to Mikhail Moudrakovski. He was selected by a panel of industry judges comprised of designer and Project Runway Canada mentor Brian Bailey, Shawn Hewson of Bustle Clothing, women’s fashion direction manager for Winners Nicole Gouveia, Marika Brose women’s fashion director of The Bay, and fashion designer David Dixon. Sheila Lam won the public vote for Best Exhibit. Alongside the design competition, the AOF Trunk Show gave attendees an exclusive shopping opportunity with more than 30 Canadian clothing and accessory designers.
