1. SPRING 2016 COLLECTIONS AT WMCFW (@WMCFashionWeek)

Canada's fashion industry converged at David Pecaut Square (221 King St. W.) in Toronto from Monday, October 19, to Friday, October 23, for World MasterCard® Fashion Week (WMCFW). The week-long trade event featured over 30 runway shows and presentations. TFI News' highlights during the week included:

SID NEIGUM (@SidNeigum)
All eyes were on Alberta-native Sid Neigum as he presented his much-anticipated spring 2016 collection. Hailed as Canada's "one-to-watch", Neigum is quickly gaining international recognition for his innovative, conceptual pieces often inspired by Japanese design and cardboard packaging. Familiar looks featuring his signature modular origami technique opened the show, followed by a fresh, all-white cotton grouping of geometric oversized shirts and tunics. Neigum also added several all-blue looks—a departure from his all-black collections of the past.

MIKHAEL KALE (@MikhaelKale)
CAFA's 2015 designer of the year presented a highly eclectic and textural collection of dresses and separates in bright mid-tone shades. Intricately hand-beaded and appliqued dresses, jackets and skirts displayed Kale's passion for adornment, while daring cut-outs were featured on other looks.

MERCEDES-BENZ START-UP (@MBStartUp)
Six emerging Canadian labels showcased capsule collections in the Mercedes-Benz Start Up (MBSU) competition fashion show on Tuesday night. They competed to win a prize package that included a $30,000 bursary, mentorship from a panel of fashion experts, editorial coverage across leading domestic and international publications, editorial support from FASHION Magazine, and a fully produced solo runway show at the WMCFW fall 2016 event in March 2016. The finalists included Beaufille, Narces, Laura Siegel (all from Toronto); Daniel Beaudet, UNTTLD (Montreal); and S.P. Badu (Calgary). Standout looks included Beaufille's suede vest and pants with grommet details (seen a week later on Lady Gaga in New York), and Laura Siegel's hand-printed draped chiffon skirt worn with a structured tunic. And, from this year's winners, Jose-Manuel St. Jacques and Simon Belanger of UNTTLD, came sexy tailored suits for women with dramatic fringe detailing and obi belts.

STAR WARS COMPETITION (@StarWars)
The six MBSU finalists also competed exclusively to win $10,000 in the Disney Consumer Products Canada's Star Wars™ design contest. The finalists were challenged to produce one look inspired by the Star Wars™ film series, in anticipation of the upcoming installment Star Wars: The Force Awakens™. Montreal's UNTTLD walked away with top honours for its Princess Leia "slave girl"-inspired look made from thousands of gold chains clipped together.

ASHTIANI (@GolnazAshtiani)
TFI New Labels® 2011 winner Golnaz Ashtiani presented a tightly edited collection for spring 2016. The presentation, more of an installation than a runway show, included layered organza and cotton dresses, oversized hoodies and tunics in candy-coloured tones.

RED (@SenecaCollege)
Kudos to Toronto's Seneca College for creating a platform to feature its top design grads at WMCFW. The event was a great opportunity to introduce the school's talent to the industry, many of whom are eager to find a job or start a new venture. RED: Emerging Designers Showcase featured five pieces each from eight recent Seneca School of Fashion alumni. Each collection was curated by designer Zoran Dobric, who has taught fashion design at Seneca for eight years. The eight participating grads were Jing Zhao, Doreen To, Feyanki Law, Jiaxin Xu, Ruby Tsai, Jing Zhao, Ronald Tam and Wanwei Huang.

DHL FASHION INDUSTRY PANEL (@DHLExpressCan)
The last day of the week brought together industry insiders as they chatted with panel moderator Julia Grieves from the label Preloved about what it takes to build and grow a successful design business in Canada. Hosted by logistics specialist DHL, featured speakers included designer Sid Neigum, winner of the 2015 DHL Exported program for the London (U.K.) market, Carolyn Quinn (IMG), and Susan Langdon (TFI).

2. Stylist Box Winner Of The Season

World MasterCard® Fashion Week may be over but the lineup of amazing participants at this season's TFI's Press and Buyers Brunch Tradeshow (TFIPBB) had buyers and media talking. Twice a year the team at Toronto Fashion Incubator (TFI) puts together a Canadian boutique-style event featuring innovative designers in apparel and accessories.

On October 21st and 22nd some of Canada's biggest names in fashion, media and buying attended the two-day event in The Studio at David Pecaut Square. Designers met and networked with over 135 attendees. Notable guests included Dina Pugliese, host, Breakfast Television; Naomi Snieckus, Mr D, CBC; Saks Fifth Avenue; Hudson's Bay Company; Elle Quebec; Global News; FLARE; The Kit; Sporting Life; Sash and Bustle; Shopgirls; and Three Fates Shop to name a few.

In addition, exclusive fashion showroom The Stylist Box (@StylistBox) returned for its second TFIPBB to present one of the event participants with the Designer of the Season Award. Winner Miriam Baker (@Miriam_Baker_)pictured right, centre) received free representation in The Stylist Box for six months. The representation is worth more than $4,000, with an expected $72,000 worth of exposure over the course of the term. Finalists also included womenswear designer Som Kong (@s0mk0ng) and jewellery designer Jon De Porter (@JonDePorter).

"Miriam Baker is an emerging womenswear brand we feel is deserving of additional exposure," says merchandising director and co-founder Christian Dare. "With our help, we hope to see her in the pages of national publications on a regular basis and to build her celebrity clientele," says communications director and co-founder Gail McInnes.

Coming Soon To Yorkville
Luxury retailer Chanel will be moving its tony boutique to Yorkville Avenue in 2017 and rumours are circulating about a Christian Dior flagship store opening on the fashionable street in 2017 or 2018. Chanel will be taking over the existing Teatro Verde location at 98 Yorkville. American-based, upscale Italian restaurant Eataly is scouting locations in the Yorkville area too. The popular eatery features celebrity chefs, a cooking school and displays of more than 10,000 products, including fresh pasta, cheeses, meat, breads, fish and vegetables.

TFI Welcomes New Mentor KAELEN
Tis the season of giving back and TFI could not be happier than to receive an offer from New York-based Canadian designer Kaelen Haworth (@KaelenNYC) to join TFI's esteemed roster of industry mentors. While attending Parsons, The New School for Design, Kaelen interned for Jenni Kayne, Stella McCartney and lingerie brand, The Lake & Stars. One year after graduating, KAELEN launched with a collection shown during New York Fashion week in 2010. Designing from a minimalist perspective with a focus on subtle details, KAELEN seeks to combine the traditional and the innovative, exploring the dichotomies of masculine and feminine, classic and modern. KAELEN strives to create pieces that are at once intelligent, archival and treasured. Her idols include Tilda Swinton, Jeff Bridges and Joan Didion. Point Break, Overboard and The Great Outdoors are some of her favorite movies. She is in love with almost all music, excluding crossover country-pop. More Retail News
In more retail news, shoppers will have to wait until September 16, 2016, for Nordstrom's opening at the Toronto Eaton Centre and Hermes, presently located at 130 Bloor St. W., will be moving eastward to 100 Bloor W., to the 42,000-sq.-ft. two-level space presently occupied by Williams Sonoma/Pottery Barn. To create interest and excitement for its February 18, 2016 Canadian debut on Queen West at Bay, Saks Fifth Avenue held several media and industry events in November and December. Recently, Saks hosted a book launch for supermodel Cindy Crawford and American fashion industry veteran Fern Mallis at the Art Gallery of Ontario. H&M Teams Ups With Paris Museum
Sweden's mass market retailer H&M will launch a line of red carpet looks for women inspired by the archives of the Les Arts Décoratifs museum in Paris. The collection of apparel and accessories is slated to hit 180 stores worldwide on April 7, 2016. The line is the latest edition of the store's Conscious Exclusive line of red-carpet looks made from more sustainable materials.
