ABOUT THE DESIGNER

Wendy Wong, a native of St. Catharines, Ontario, is an ambitious, gutsy and motivated designer who credits her perseverance, tenacity and strong work ethic as key factors in her success. The young entrepreneur demonstrates a keen sense of business savvy, always looking out for the best price and watching the bottom line. She approaches new projects and situations by meticulously researching every aspect, cost and detail and then weighing the pros and cons.

Her scientific and analytical approach to problem solving come as no surprise as Wong graduated from the University of Toronto with a biology major. Her dream was to pursue a career as a neurological scientist but somewhere along the way she got side-tracked. "I never, ever thought I was going to go into fashion," says Wong. But after making a miniskirt out of green acetate lining and part of a pink shower curtain, there was no turning back.

She enrolled in the fashion design program at the International Academy of Design as a part-time student while concurrently completing her final year at U of T. After graduating from both U of T and the Academy, Wong launched House of Spy in March of 2000. A year later, she moved into a studio at the Toronto Fashion Incubator.

Driven by a passion to see the House of Spy label become a globally-recognized brand, Wong has participated in various trade shows in the U.S. including Magic and Pool. Her hard work seems to be paying off: in 2004 House of Spy was named one of the world's best brands by Sportswear International and her sales soared to over $250,000 in just 2 years.
